The Green Hornet Streetcar Crash
Added 2021-04-06 09:30:59 +0000 UTCAt the end of this video I show an image of the intersection where the disaster took place. Getting the exact right location was pretty tricky, but also very interesting. The junction where the crash occurred is well known (the intersection of 63rd and State Streets), but I had to consult several accounts of the accident to work out which side of the underpass to look at.
I then confirmed it by looking up old maps of Chicago from the 1950s - some of which are surprisingly detailed.
Here's a link to the location in Google Street View. There's very little to see, except for the notable absence of buildings, and some concrete footings where houses once stood. As I say in the video, you'd never know that such an appalling disaster ever took place there.

It's strange how these things can disappear with the passing of time. According to some sources the foundations of some of the buildings destroyed by the fire are still visible... but I couldn't find them no matter how hard I searched.
