The Algo Centre Mall Collapse

In this video I mention that the Elliot Lake Library was situated inside the Algo Centre Mall. After the collapse, the library moved, ending up as a tenant in the replacement mall, Pearson Plaza.

In an interesting epilogue to this story, it appears that the library has had to close at least once due to leaks in the roof. Although they're fairly sure that - this time - the leaks do not indicate and structural problems, it must be frustrating and worrying (to say the least) to find themselves in this position again.

Let's hope they're right, and the leaks are nothing to worry about. A second collapse in such similar circumstances would be almost unbelievable.

That's something I've thought would be interesting with both building collapses and building fires. Here in the UK we have a terrible history of catastrophic fires which are always followed by a change in legislation... which is always rolled back after enough time has passed, only for there to be another similar (and preventable) disaster. It's something I'd really like to track the full history of sometime.

Fascinating Horror

Have you ever thought about running your building collapse videos in chronological order? The scripts all seem to have similar themes and storylines. It would be interesting to see if any of the messages change from the first to the last. I was struck by how similar this mall collapse sounded to the Hyatt Regency walkway disaster. The regret expressed by both engineers of each project was eerily similar. Brick Immorter and Coaster College are great channels. I think you all do great videos. It’s really interesting to see each take on the same topics.

It's something I'd never much thought about before, but it does seem like an odd decision. Underground car parks are way more common where I'm from... but there are a couple of buildings I know of with rooftop parking, usually as a space-saving thing. Like you say, though, in the case of the Algo Centre, there could easily have been other solutions.

Fascinating Horror

I understand that there were other issues at play than just using the roof as a parking lot, but... why put a parking lot on the roof??? That seems like it's just asking for trouble! And while I understand that this disaster could have been a lot worse, I feel so bad for the families of the two women who died.
