The Cairngorm Plateau Disaster

In this video I mention just how badly extremes of cold can affect the human body. It's something which I think isn't always understood. Cold can be devastating, and it can cause people to deteriorate way faster than you might think.

This article, for example, talks about how hikers caught in extreme cold can be reduced to a state similar to sleepwalking. They keep moving, but they can no longer make intelligent decisions, and keep on shuffling along until collapse.

At other times, a phenomenon known as "paradoxical undressing" can take place. This is where people who are suffering from acute hypothermia become so confused that they begin to undress and throw away their cold weather gear. It's often one of the last things they do before death, and it really demonstates just how disorientating cold can be.

Sure thing - thanks for those suggestions. Will check out both. Coming from a country with few natural disasters, it always amazes me to see the damage that hurricanes and floods can do. Could certainly imagine one changing the character of a piece of coastline!

Ps. Check out 1898 Johnstown, Pennsylvania flood... the dam nearby failed, causing the disaster. I have been to that area and you can see the flood water line above 6' on buildings there. Erie. Thanks Marie

One more note... I grew up on Long Island, NY, going to the beaches out in Hampton Bays, NY. I have always wondered what the Bay and its surrounding shore line looked like before the 1938 hurricane. Anyway, I thought you might want to take a look at researching that hurricane. From what I understand it greatly changed not only the landscape but the type of business once established there... i.e. lots of gambling establishments where the rich New Yorkers would go socialize. Check it out. Marie
