The Eastland Disaster

While the Eastland Disaster isn't that well-remembered by the wider world, there are many people who work extremely hard to ensure that it's not totally forgotten. Among the organisations who help to preserve the memory of what happened that day is the Eastland Disaster Historical Society.

Their website is excellent. Not only does it have a wealth of unique images, but also a lot of background information - way more than I could include in the video. I found reading about the divers who worked to recover bodies particularly interesting.

This is pretty unique, too. As a fundraiser they hosted a mock trial to establish who was to blame for the disaster. Actors played the parts of various historical figures, and they allowed the audience to vote on whether or not the owners of the ship were guilty of involuntary manslaughter. I found the results... well, interesting to say the least!

I always tend to stay on the deck of any boat I find myself on - it's become just force of habit after learning about so many disaster... but I've found that I get some really great views, too!

Kristian, Hi! Hope you are well. Thanks as usual for another fascinating video. Such a senseless, avoidable disaster... Makes me cringe. Note to self - stay on top side of boat at all times. Also, I wanted to say thank you for adding the extra information and references regarding the respective tragedies... I very much enjoy watching and learning all of it. Take care, Marie
