The R101: "Britain's Hindenburg"

Just a little side note for this video - I didn't plan at all to post it on the anniversary of the crash... that was something that happened completely by chance, and that I only noticed as I was finalising the video. What are the odds?

Other than that, if you'd like to know more about this disaster, I'd suggest the Airship Heritage Trust, who have an amazing collection of images and descriptions. Their website gives a really evocative picture of what it must have been like to ride on board the R101: canvas walls, tiny portholes, balsa wood furniture... it all sounds incredibly fragile to me!

Optimistic of them! Although, that said, even now some people insist that airships are the future.

Fascinating Horror

I remember the R101 from a TV show in the 80'd called Ripley's Believe it or Not. They did an episode about airships and how they may be coming back... that was in 1984... LOL

I know! And quite incredible that it took multiple disasters before the airship was written off as a means of passenger travel.

Fascinating Horror

This was great video, I didn’t realize there had been other airship disasters aside from the hindenburg. Wild how they thought this was a viable option
