The Story of Flight 182

In this video I mention that there was a very large number of Pacific Southwest Airlines employees on board Flight 182 when it crashed. Here's my source for that, which provides a little more about those employees, and the impact it had on the company.

Most of these employees weren't working at the time of the crash. In fact, they were "deadheading". That's an airline industry term for the practise of staff hitching a ride on a company aircraft to get to where they need to be for work purposes.

In this case, the majority of PSA employees were deadheading in the passenger part of the craft, but back in the 1970s pilots were often given seats up in the cockpit when deadheading. That's why - as you might have noticed - the transcripts from the cockpit voice recorder include some words spoken by an off-duty pilot.

Comments

This one's a particularly bad one... but I've read that airplane crashes, on average, are actual pretty survivable. I think most incidents that are classified as a "crash" are actually quite small. Hopefully that's some comfort!

Fascinating Horror

The amount of dead in this disaster is sad, airplane crashes always seem to end with more dead than alive.
