The Story of Flight 5390

There was so much about this story that I couldn't find space for in the video, but the thing I most regret leaving out is what happened to the people involved afterwards.

Incredibly, both pilots went back to flying, and had long and successful careers. Tim Lancaster even dealt with a few other emergencies in his time - though none quite as dramatic as this one! Alastair Atchison flew until he was in his 60s before retiring.

Nigel Ogden was awarded the Queen's Commendation for Valuable Service in the Air and a Polaris Award for his role in the incident... and the entire cabin crew (female stewards included) were collectively named "Man of the Year" by the Royal Association for Disability and Rehabilitation.

It really is a pleasure to tell stories like this once in a while - all the more so when there's something (like the importance of small details) that can be learned from them.

Fascinating Horror

Glad you found it useful. I know that little things can have big consequences... but it sometimes takes a story like this to really illustrate that!

Fascinating Horror

It was refreshing to hear a story where there were no casualties! Things could have turned out so much worse. It's incredible how something so seemingly minute can cause such damage.

I wanted to thank you for posting this video. I presented this to my class today. I work for a major automotive EV company. Your video really was able to illustrate how details, no matter how minute, can be incredibly important and sometimes the difference between life and death. In the electric vehicle industry, the safety of batteries is paramount. This video, especially considering how the details affected the outcome, really made an impression on everyone.
