The Gotthard Tunnel Fire

In this video I briefly mention the Gotthard Base Tunnel – the most recently-constructed tunnel to pass under the Gotthard Massif mountain range. What I didn’t mention is that this impressive feat of civil engineering also had a very impressive opening ceremony.

Here’s a video of part of it

I think this opening ceremony got a lot of negative coverage in the press – perhaps because it is a little dramatic for something as “boring” as a tunnel. But, at the same time, it's hard to argue that it's not entertaining. Creating one of the longest tunnels in the world is a considerable feat, and it definitely should be celebrated. Maybe not celebrated exactly like this, but still…

I think this one is on my list. Definitely one I want to cover. It's interesting to note how different tunnels handle hazardous materials: one way systems, vehicle spacing, or - as is the case here - designated hours for the transit of hazardous freight

Fascinating Horror

Hadn’t heard about this before, and was expecting the worst with the rubber tires and photographic film. We’ve got a local tunnel fire that might make a good subject for a video. On April 7, 1982 a drunk driver crashed into a wall in the Caldecott Tunnel on route 24 in Orinda, CA. Then a gasoline truck hit the drunk’s car. Seven people died. Hazardous materials are now banned from the tunnel except from 3am to 5am.
