Poganica Bay: A Cave Diving Disaster

There are a couple of sources I have to highlight when it comes to this strange and fascinating story.

The statement of Tomáš Sládek

Archived on an old website dedicated to diving, you can find this (translated) statement by Tomáš Sládek, one of the dive instructors who was present on the trip.

It's a shocking read - especially his words about how unprepared the police divers who turned up were:

"Their equipment is worse than ours. An ordinary jacket and in it one bottle, one automatic, one unsuitable hand torch. Instead of a guide line, just a piece of about 10mm thick twisted rope, wound on a paper distribution spool. They wanted to borrow flashlights..."

The description of how the party were treated by the police is also worth reading. It's eye-opening to see just how deep the suspicion was that they'd committed an impossible murder.

Footage from Poganica Bay caves

I also came across this footage from a diver moving through some passages in the Poganica Bay caves.

It's a short, and doesn't show much, but it does give you an idea of how confusing and claustrophobic it could be down there.

Personally, although underwater caves are beautiful, cave diving definitely isn't for me!

Comments

An excellent suggestion - I've been compiling notes on this, and am planning to start on a script fairly soon

Fascinating Horror

Thank you! I feel like, especially with a story like this, it's easy to speculate... but the simple truth is we only know so much.

Fascinating Horror

I also think the police made a ridiculous conclusion, as suicide was my first thought as well. I think what I appreciate the most in your stories, is the editing… only including the facts relevant to the story. Too many (all) of the other “big names” include far too much fluff, making the videos far too long! If you can’t tell me the story in under 30 minutes, it’s unlikely I’ll ever see it. Extremely well done as usual!

How about a video on the Killdozer incident in 2004?
