The Most Terrifying Film Ever Made

I really can't recommend Threads highly enough. It's an incredibly powerful, incredibly raw and realistic film about nuclear war. It was made on a shoestring budget more than 30 years ago, and it still hits hard today.

You can watch it online via the Internet Archive if you haven't yet seen it. Although - a word of warning - it really is quite dark and disturbing. I couldn't sleep the night after I first saw it.

And if you've already seen Threads, I'd also recommend the American TV movie The Day After, which is in some ways a US version of Threads. Just as horrifying, just as real, and just as sobering to watch.

Frightenly realistic!

I don't blame you for having nightmares - The Day After is not an easy film to watch. I've only seen it once, but there are some scenes that I can recall with perfect clarity to this day

Fascinating Horror

When I was a child, I watched the first hour of The Day After and it scared me so badly I turned off the TV. Took me hours to fall asleep that night and I kept jumping awake with nightmares. As an adult, I watched a two minute clip of Threads and it made The Day After look fairly tame by comparison.
