A Brief History of Route 666

Route 666 isn't the only road to suffer from sign theft - in fact, it's something that's an issue all over the world. In many countries mile markers that feature numbers like 69 or 420 often go missing, to the point that they're often replaced with markers that say 68.99 or 419.99.

Famous places also suffer. Penny Lane in Liverpool had its sign stolen so often that authorities ended up getting rid of the metal street sign, and instead painted a sign onto a nearby wall. Meanwhile, in Germany, cities chose to weld signs firmly in place to deter theft.

The Wikipedia for "street sign theft" collects dozens of these odd little anecdotes. It's definitely a recommended read!

Wow - I've seen this footage a few times before, but I automatically assumed it wasn't real, as it seems just too dramatic for reality. Have added this disaster to my list!

The "tracking chip" tactic is a novel one... but I assume just a bluff. A bit like when there are signs about guard dogs but no actual guard dogs!

Fascinating Horror

I grew up near a road called Horneytown Road. They tried putting the sign up higher than normal signs, and putting up a notice saying there was a tracking chip inside the sign that would be used to track down anyone who steals it. As of 2023, they've just completely given up on having a sign at all and it's unmarked.

How about a video on the crash of TransAsia Airways Flight 235? I first discovered it a few years back when I saw, not one, but two dashcam videos from cars that both happened to be on the bridge that it clipped on the way down. Here's a compilation video of the crash that starts with both of the dashcam vids I mentioned and also includes a few other camera angles as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9PaGXHNGxIw
