While researching this story I came across a video which features an interview with two of the miners who survived the explosion. You can view it on Wikipedia here. It’s quite long, but it’s absolutely riveting.
Here’s a quote from one of the interviewees, Gary Martin. He speaks about receiving a delivery of coffee while awaiting rescue at the bottom of the air shaft in the Number Nine mine:
"An odd thing is, they had lowered a two gallon bucket down to us with a big mayonnaise jar full of hot coffee... I went to pull the jar up out of the bucket and the lid was so hot I couldn't handle it with my bare hands. I had to put my gloves back on. So I pulled the jar up out and I said to Charlie Crim, "Charlie, you want some coffee?"
And he said, "Yeah," and that was the only thing Charlie said all the time we were at the bottom of the shaft.
And Charlie came over and took the jar, unscrewed the lid off it... and probably drank 3 inches of coffee out of it that was hot - it was scalding. And it didn't even burn him!
Now... that's what kind of state of mind you can get in, okay?"
