They were more seen as a source of culture and entertainment since they could sing, dance, play instruments, and have high-level conversations. Clients would make gigantic donations many times for the house for the chance of being in the Oiran presence (and this would progress from being in the same room to being allowed to talk to her), and after being a regular the client couldn't see another Oiran. Ofc that to go up the ranks a woman would need to start in the low ranks and sleep with occasional clients who enter the house. After this period oirans lost their importance because the uprising of the Geisha as they were more affordable and able to make money from more people while being a similar source of entertainment. ... About the little girls, yes that's bad, also they would be trained to be an Oiran by the Oiran herself (an example is the two little girls who help the Oiran at Tanjiro house), around 10yo they would start to take clients and try to climb the ranks from there.
