It is exponential only at the beginning because there are a lot more people who were not exposed to it than those who were, so it's perfectly natural to have an exponential spread at this stage, but as more people get infected, even if we don't practice social distancing, eventually it will hit a plateau and the immunity of those infected will kill it before it can reach others who were not touched by it, and it will die out. The probability of getting every person on Earth infected is almost 0. The reason is that movement and interactions between people is not a Brownian motion. In a completely random interaction, yes, eventually everybody will catch it, but there many people who are much more isolated in different parts of the world who will not even know somebody who caught the virus, let alone catch it themselves. It will grow quickly in cities, but very quickly it will reach a plateau, and I think not even 5% of the population will come in contact with it, before it dies out.

I found in April 9, 2018, New Yorker magazine article, but it doesn’t correlate completely with what you said. This says the factory is in Prato, and the Chinese workers are from Wenzhou.
