A story. As a kid I would do whatever it took to try to keep myself safe. All kinds of strange superstitious-level stuff because I was so afraid that awful things would happen if I didn’t. The rituals I would do would go on for hours at a time. It got so bad that it put me in the hospital at 23 and that was when the psychiatrist told me that I had OCD. Because it was serious, I had to spend time in an intensive program where I learned the most important lesson of my life: don’t waste energy always trying to keep yourself safe. In the intensive program, I was told to complete exercises where I’d have to expose myself to everything I thought was dangerous. And it taught me so much; it allowed me to embrace fear and not to run from it. I look back on my life now and see how I wasted nearly two decades of my life being alive, but not LIVING. Take chances even if they terrify you. Fuck safety.
