The more subtle and sophisticated version of this is called the "Law of Reciprocity..." I was doing some business consulting about a decade ago (2006- 8) for a guy in Beijing... and he sent me money to "buy an iPhone..." since I had given the POS far more than he paid for in ideas and advice, like predicting the 2008 "economic downturn," far in advance... So what does he do? He "cherry picks" sound advice, then quits paying me, because his business dropped substantially. But he made all these grandiose 'promises' and only sent me the supposedly 'extra' money because he wanted MORE for increasingly LESS. Stay the hell away from these scammers... And BTW: "Africa is now China's China..." so also avoid both communist and Muslim countries... if you "aren't one of them!?" CCP controlled China will likely 'implode' in the not so distant future... because noone is going to buy their "smoke and mirrors" (on three sets of books, vs. two in the West...) nor be foolish enough to give them loans... once HK's money laundering banks, soon go under! (They undercut the West, built all this new infrastructure with low wage 'stolen' labor and money... and their loans are a "house of cards," much like the quasi- Communist model the leftist oligarchs, control based in Europe. It's another "rape and pillage" system, masquerading as a viably 'sustainable' economic model... built on quicksand... to counterbalance the "faux capitalist model," they implemented in the West... and there are going to be a LOT of very POd people worldwide soon... when all this 'unravels!' Spot on Coach. My roommate who is also the drummer of my band is one of these guys. He's Jamaican and I've noticed a lot of Jamaicans and other islanders act this way. I believe it's how they survive in the third world. This guy is constantly doing me favors that I don't want or is always trying to manipulate me in some way. He does the same thing with the neighbors. He is always making insurance policies with people by way of manipulation and his charm. Every time rent is due there is always some excuse as to why he can't pay it on time. Family member died, work is slow, his wallet was stolen, etc.. He always makes himself appear to legitimate when it's really just a scam. Long story short this guy has been taking advantage of me for a long time while pretending to be my friend. He knows I'm a nice guy and has played me for years. Now that I'm waking up I see him for who he is and unfortunately I let this snake get way too involved in my life. I can go on and on about all the dumb bullshit he has put me through and how he would always justify it by playing on my emotions. I should have kept this guy at arms distance. Since I let him in too close, I now have to deal with the shit storm of removing him from my house and life. This is also why you should never be a nice guy, you will always suffer for it. Yes, just keep it. The only time you should give money back is when it was clearly a mistake (e.g., sending 100 dollars when he meant to send 10). This should be a lesson to him. He should pay for having tried to manipulate you so dishonestly.
