You're quite right: In a civil war, usually the losing side is kicked out of the country. Not half the population, of course. Just the segment of the population that was politically active against the winning side.

Question/Observation Regarding Spanish Civil War: At the end, Republicans lost. Republican supporters left Spain. They fled. Those that remained in Spain were rounded up, hunted down and executed. (uncounted thousands) A handful were jailed for years. So the 'end game' in this civil was is 'separation' ? * Is separation the only way to avoid a civil war? * Not sure about historical examples in other places.
