Overdose - The Semiotics of C.S. Peirce

An ignorant Pills, without prior knowledge, interviews Erik on his favourite dude: the prolific C.S. Peirce--scientist, logician, semiotician.

We try to get clear on the triadic structure of the sign and seem to just scratch the surface.

If you need some more of this, the intro book is The Essential Peirce I, https://amzn.to/37K2NqG. Take a look at the attached diagram as well!

He says the best place to start is the Essential Peirce vols 1 and 2

I’d like to ask Erik if he ever read Peirce on Signs and if he recommends buying it. I’ve read the free sample and it’s really good imo but I’m no academic or scholar.

Fantastic pair of episodes! Just watched this ep today, and I can't get the unyielding stream of signification out of the molecular apparatus they call my head.

Can't describe the relief I felt when even Pills is like 'my brain's already hurting' lol. It's really interesting though, and it sounds like it couldn't have been easy for Erik to condense things even down to this level. One thing I'd like clarified is that when Erik is talking about the symbolic, he says it's dismissed by Saussure and his system, but isn't 'conventional' a social construct, and hence wouldn't that fall within Saussure' purview of arbitrariness? Especially if language (or at least the noun) is 'symbolic'? Also, in my mind I can't help but make a comparison between icons and (at least first order) simulacra. I still prefer Saussure tho cause I'm extremely into the French postmodernists and the psychology that's relevant to that philosophy. I thought I'd stream part 2 right after this, but my brain definitely needs a break now lol.

I really enjoy your duo videos this and the cybernetics videos are my favorite so far. I did get lost at the end but the diagram helps a lot thanks for that. I'm looking forward to your next one.

Is the idea of the interpretant similar to Deleuze’s idea of becoming. As in the interpretant and the object create each other via the sign by their particular relation?

Heyyo, its called "microdose on semiotics and semiology", it came out last week or the week before (public)

Does anyone have a link to the Saussure episode Pills mentioned at 27:35? Can't seem to find it in my podcast or patreon feed. Or was it just one of the Systems Theory eps but I forgot the reference to Saussure?

You can get The Essential Peirce volumes 1 and 2 on Amazon pretty easily. There’s also Peirce on Signs, but most of the articles in that are in the Essential Peirce.

This is extremely my shit.

I hope you feel that way after listening to it, haha I had to slow Erik way down.

Looking forward to this one. Great choice of topic. Peirce was encyclopedic. Provides great summaries of scholastic debates that were otherwise missing in my undergrad. This and Kristeva together are super valuable. Many thanks.
