McLuhan’s ‘Gutenberg Galaxy’ is entirely dedicated to this topic; I.e how phonemic language elevated sight above all other senses, displaced our pre-literate audio-tactile sensibility, and established vision as paradigmatic of western culture and thought. He also argues that the electronic age will return us to an audio-tactile mode of experience and knowledge. Great episode!

2021-07-02 13:21:01 +0000 UTCIf only Baudrillard could see what the simulation has continued to devolve into because of the pandemic: under neoliberalism life has already long passed into simulation, but even this realm of stunted experience had more flesh to it than what passed for existence under the lockdowns, the endless days of not meeting your peers (or anyone in many cases), and how social interaction has been almost completely mediated by screens. Although I think Baudrillard would have just said that what we experienced was something that would have happened eventually anyway, and that the pandemic was just a catalyst. It makes sense that simulacra and simulation are image based, and therefore lightbased, as simulacra, in all their ontological illumination are blinding us to the fact that they mask an absence of the real. All this sight based interaction when in reality there's actually nothing to see. Really interesting concept(s) my dude, it definitely deserves being expanded on.
