Pill Pod 47 - Hyperobjects, Pre-Post-Political Realism & Couples Therapy (Exclusive)

Bit of a grab bag on this one, we haven't done a "personal" episode in about 6 months so we thought it would be a good idea to catch up on what we're reading, writing, and researching outside of the podcast. Erik gives a primer on hyperobject cartography and speculative realism; Victor explains his argument that permanent revolution is phenomenologically impossible; and Matt explains how a woman named Cathy turned him into a Rawlsian socialist.

A wholesome episode

Yeah, that Stirner and Deleuze go very well together makes a lot of sense. I'd love some links or explanation as to how Stirner's theory can be used to critique Lacan tho

Stirner and Deleuze go together so good, combined they create a powerful critique of Lacan

Loved the little post credits scene ;)

An honorific for putting up with the general unhelpful nature of academic tutoring should definitely be a thing. Imagine being on the phone in May 2020 with your tutor and having to awkwardly explain to a head of department that a pandemic is going to render all your data from a depression survey absolutely useless, and him actually trying to tell you 'oh no, it's not that bad, surely things will be back to normal in 3 more months.' RIP Victor still needs to give an answer of how he expects current political institutions to go from liberal democratic to sortional. Also if this leaves socioeconomic relations unchanged, namely how will that solve our current oligarchic problems, where the richest people can use their wealth to influence politics and hence still be the main political power players in society. And if you don't change this, how will you meaningfully achieve the egalitarian social you want? Nobody's saying have no institutions, just make those institutions not have entrenched, hierarchical power over those they're supposed to exist for. And IDK, but I've never spoke to an anarchist who expects its possible to convince QAnon, fascists and other assorted far-gone reactionaries to join our side. One of the goals of revolution is to completely disempower these people by any means necessary. What we hope is that the masses who are currently liberals but actually do care about creating a meaningfully better world will be convinced to join our side, rather than people who want to build walls or gulags. Also, the Lacanian elements mentioned here don't seem to take into account the influence capitalism has on our desire, and how being aware of environmental influence is key to resisting the capture of said desire by the current system. Victor should check out a bit of Max Stirner's theory (The Ego and Its Own), because I find it does away with a lot of the moralism, and focuses a lot more on the individual in an unorthodox, egalitarian way that a lot of popular radical left tendencies can learn quite a bit from, especially so that the individual and their desire isn't sacrificed on the altar of an abstracted collective. Even Pills should love Stirner, he was Nietzschian before Nietzsche himself back in the day. Also, congrats to Pills for providing us with tangible proof that it is actually possible for Matt to be lost for words xD His critique on Nietzsche's resentment is very on point. Some really interesting, lovely ideas and projects from Matt there.

Think Zizek and So On's podcast had McGowan on precisely about this

I would definitely like to hear more about 'critical cartography' from Eric, that sounds very interesting. I am a software developer and have worked with geo databases and GIS software before. In my previous job we implemented an inventory and device-tracking solution for a public museum. User tracking was opt-in and anonymized, they were doing excellent work and it was an interesting project, but I felt kind of dirty nevertheless. Just imagine a bit of a different use-case, and some slightly different handling of the stored data and you have an excellent tool of oppression. It's also not that complicated to setup and run a system like this these days. Cheers...

It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a humanist to embrace the consequences of the climate-biodiversity crisis. Or, reworking Latour, we have never been Human. Morton, Latour, Braidotti, Fernando, Bryant, Plumwood …all thinkers who start from the premise that human (mind/society/consciousness) can only exist within a functioning ecosystem. Posthuman ecology.

Peter Haggar

Victor should check out Capitalism and Desire by Todd McGowan. If I understood his project it is similar to what McGowan puts forward and it might be a helpful reference.

Hearing about the personal studies is motivating. Love the updates.

Btw, shout out to Erik and Pillsies for the Peircean sessions. His typology was a centrepiece in the study of protest signs done as part of my dissertation. Owe you a round of fine Canadian crafts.
