While ideally a practice like Sati shouldn't be the norm IMO, I don't think it's possible to intervene without implementing some sort of imperialist, colonial subjugation, the domination of one culture over another. I think the best thing to do is provide avenues for women who don't want to sacrifice themselves to not have to do so, to not be dependent in any way on a family that would expect and pressure them to do something like this, while allowing those who voluntarily want to die to do so. Because like you said, just criminalising it didn't stop people from wanting to do it, it's a cultural thing and yeah, who are Europeans to just impose their values on others like that, as if they've achieved a perfect society? It's a messy situation, with no perfect solution: such is life.

Really great. Reminds me of the debates mostly in Quebec but elsewhere as well regarding Muslim women and their traditional dress. Is the state and Western society "freeing" them of the strictures of a patriarchal order or exerting colonial power over them and denying them their agency over something as basic as their mode of dress?
