Today we discuss the pervasive pastiche and corny conservatism of all our favourite nerd culture products (but not Star Wars 'cause it sucks ass).

The perfect example of ideological superhero series are basically any of the DC series on Netflix rn, from Flash to Supergirl to Arrow, take your pic. The problem is always individuals, there's never a systemic problem, the police are always depicted as just, etc, etc. Like Matt said, the job is to restore the status quo, and like Pills said, 'through the power of friendship' but minus the witty banter. "in some ways that takes the onus off of us, to collectively do something to make society better" Victor having a total libertarian socialist moment there! <3 I hope from time to time you keep doing episodes which comment on pop culture in this way as they're a nice break from the heavy theory and it lends to some great banter. Although it could also be my bias as I can't get enough of culture industry/ideology theory lol

I recently randomly came accross a fb group of leftists giving each other investing tips and harping on about Dogecoin. Surreal.

(20:40) on the conservative tendency to think categorically while ignoring difference or nuance: Ian from Innuendo Studios talked about how "the Alt-Right is a veritable box factory" putting huge amounts of leftist rhetoric, which would rebut their core arguments, into reductive categories so that they can be ignored (10:16) https://youtu.be/wmVkJvieaOA

Echoes from Elsewhere

Isn't nerd culture just a way to convert your esoteric interests into cultural capital/expertise? I feel like it's just the natural conclusion of liberal values, inserted into publics. Combine that with the early 21st century's need to fashion some kind of meaningful unique identity to accommodate for the lack of a god figure, and presto you have "nerds." The term is kinda loose now though? People into sports, guns, politics, cars, and makeup etc. aka: previously deemed culturally less offensive interests, are 100% nerds now too. Nothing makes me want to rip out my spinal cord and transcend into a vegetative state more than talking to a guy in his early thirties who has been "really into" cryptocurrencies for the last year.
