Pill Pod 85 - The Idea of Communism III | Jean-Luc Nancy (Exclusive)

Another one! Same conference, but an extended discussion on the sense and meaning of the word "communism." Looking forward to your comments!

As a Nancy fan, I appreciated this episode. Thank you! But, based on his work, I never understood Nancy to be as sanguine as you've portrayed here. His emphasis on decision points to the fact that our being-with is not an original state of comradery, but always a matter of shared responsibility and without guarantee for what world we will become.

Really liking what yinz put down around 50:00 to 60:00. The condition of our freedom is also the condition of our unfreedom.

u prolly know this already, but Jean Luc Nancy received a heart transplant in the 90s and then got cancer. Cultural French treasure he was he survived all and lived til 81 yo. Whereas Philippe Lacoue-LaBarthe who was apparently healthier, tho a heavy smoker, w whom he co wrote ‘The title of the letter’ only made it to 67yo. Claire Denis, fab fr filmmaker made 2 movies indebted to Nancy… L’Intrus and a doc. on a train. Blockchain and trustless system could be a cum... more than the coin itself. Y’all should do an episode on Avital Ronell… her take on the ‘ propre’… fr translation of Heidegger’s ‘being one’s own’ I venture. the own-ness. Anyway, she’s written enuf books to deserve an episode I think………..

I liked the piece, liked the discussion, liked the way you laid out your intention to stay away from theory vs praxis. I think it structured the conversation nicely. As a non-philosopher, I get a little nervous on the “just theory” episodes but you did a good job walking me through it. I liked the ideas about property and that property IS you. I, too, disagree with Sarah. I must be a 14 year-old boy as well.

What an activist. The world is a much better place now that “we” criticize everyone for everything they say. Idk what we would do without heroes like Sarah.

When Mark Fisher died Graeber wrote on Twitter that "Fisher was a guy that had already come up with half the ideas i thought were my own" or something along those lines

Um, Matt, Levinas actually got the face of the Other from Franz Rosenzweig whom he cites in the preface to Totality and Infinity. Martin Buber was a friend of Rosenzweig (and co-translator of the Tanakh from Hebrew to German), and Rosenzweig's writings on the face precede Buber's own (see last chapter of The Star of Redemption).

Echoes from Elsewhere

What do you think of his last chapter of Nancy's The Truth of Democracy, "Is Everything Political?" where he argues it is not. Of course, Nancy wrote on politics, but the separation of the political and the nonpolitical is an important distinction in his work

Echoes from Elsewhere

It's weird because how can the question of property be anything but political? How can the way we ontologically perceive ourselves, others and those interrelationships be anything but political? The primeval forms of property Nancy talks about like love, friendship and art are all mediated by the type of social organisation one has been born into, which is why I find it weird how he tries to excise the political from his argument, especially considering how much the Frenchies were going on about sociopolitical subjectivity in the 20th century. Even a statement like "I never exist alone" defies neoliberal ontology. Also 100% agree with Victor that you guys need to cover Graeber at some point: ideally a series covering Bullshit Jobs (public episode), Debt and The Dawn of Everything. Shame you didn't talk a bit about the origin of the word 'communism' like Nancy began his article with, but for those interested, it's asserted by some that the German philosopher-poet Holderlin was the first to use it in a recently recovered text called Communism of Spirits, strangely enough spelt exactly how we would in English. https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.1080/00168890.2022.2052430

The ABCs of philosophy, Always Be Cumming. Loved the episode, but I guess I've outted myself as someone with a 14 year old humor, great nonetheless.

Deranged comment

The comment I should really be writing is about how I think Nancy IS political in a kind of extensive sense, but I am too cranky for it right now…

I don’t think you are going to enjoy my comment at all today… I am actually just cranky that my comment about your Nancy episode is going to be this and not an engagement with the content concerning Nancy and I blame all of you. I am really trying to be understanding of the fact that I assume that the way you record this seems to be just a bunch of bros sitting around talking shit about philosophy. And that men tend to use crude humour with each other as a kind of fraternal bonding thing. But you have and audience and that means that you are not actually just talking to the bros. Men making crude or sexual jokes in front of or addressed to women is a very very common form of sexual harassment. (Tell me if I need to expand upon this or provide data about it,but I am basically relying on you immediately understanding that crude jokes and humour are definitely a thing that men use in order to sexually harass women). I don’t think I am particularly sensitive to it and Erik does have a penchant for a crude joke that will make me cringe every now and again, but this particular episode was fucking relentless and it just made me feel so uncomfortable. When you sit around sharing crude jokes with each other it is likely to possess a dimension of the experience of that kind of humour as harassment for women who hear it. And I am just annoyed that none of you possessed the shred of being in common that would mean that you would have some awareness about how a bunch of bros sitting around making crude jokes might not be the thing if you don’t want to make women listening feel fucking uncomfortable. You are not making the bro podcast for the bros. Ostensibly you want women to listen to you. Do better.
