Pill Pod 103 - Feminist Fight Night: Nussbaum vs. Butler (Exclusive)

What was a niche, inter-feminist fight in the 90s proves to be prophetically relevant this week. Pills and Victor narrate Martha Nussbaum coming at Judith Butler and almost split the difference.

This was great. Maybe it was the flu fever, but you gave us the fight night that never happened by embodying Butler v Nussbaum’s positions. Victor was good here, due in big part to Pills pushing the buttons. In the documentary Best of Enemies: Buckley vs. Vidal one commentator says that “Real argument, in front of the public, is who is the better person.” FYI: Buckley & Vidal were writers of ideas yet also ran for office

Just chiming in as a Victor stan here

Would b one thing if victor could think… and give an account of a critical flaw to Butler’s thinking, but this whining and complaining about what? that she’s been successful? is not only stupid and boring but also resentful and mean … just as Nussbaum is. I’d like to hear a more substantive critique, sure, Butler’s not a God…Joan Copjec has written an essay from a psychoanalytical and philosophical pov that is compelling. of course maybe that is to come…. i am only 1/4 way thru, FF where necessary….anyway, victor’s very naive and ‘Platonic’ approach to writing is what one encounters most often in my experience of the academic world among profs more even than students. the awful domination of analytical philosophy and logical positivism and its anti- post structural drum roll, that only the english speaking could dream up as reality. Not an approach to writing that is what writing and language more or less are, outside of the most simple notions of communicating about routine tasks, and that is fucking impossible to do and impossible not to do. Moreover, even the most rudimentary graduate student in humanities must have come across the question of ‘style.’ Language ,and writing even more so, is not a clear glass window onto the logos of reality. There is work at work…. etc.
