Pill Pod 70 - Fanon (Exclusive)

Just want to kick off this description with some thanks for being one of the few people willing to pay for content on the internet. Doesn't look like this'll ever be the kind of podcast that allows us to quit our day jobs, but because you're here it's enough for some trips to the grocery store and enough to grab some books that we wouldn't otherwise buy and do research we wouldn't otherwise be incentivized to do. Thank you for your money and the other feedback as well.

That said, this was one of the higher ranked topics from the previous votes--Fanon on postcolonialism. We looked at doing Black Skin, White Masks but that is just not a book to be done in sections. So, we decided on this section from Wretched of the Earth, in which Fanon lays out a more general project for a world after colonialism. Check for the reading attached to this episode.

I am generally hard pressed to distinguish your brilliant episodes from your merely very good ones. This definitely belongs to the first category! I do not find it THAT hard to reconsile letting indiginous peoples choose their leaders/government as they wish and then having an opinon on their choices. But I am not an academic or particularely well read on the subject. Your different positions gave me food for thought - and a chuckle here and there!

I would guess just more experience with Baudrillard’s work than Sartre’s. And white people just suck at pronouncing any non-Anglo language lol. He probably practiced some terms in graduate school but doesn’t have a general mastery of French. This is all speculation, mind you.

You and me both

This was an EXCELLENT episode. Thank you Victor for voicing concerns I have always had about radical right appropriation of postcolonial discourse, and thank you Pills for properly labeling rap / hip hop “purists” as fucking racists. Right on guys. Check out Walter Mignolo’s work. Im taking his seminar this semester and he provides a different perspective on colonization. It’s very challenging, but totally worth the effort. Actually presenting on Fanon and Césaire this upcoming Monday, so your timing couldn’t have been better :)

One of society's sacred cows which the majority of the modern left is afraid to touch is the democratic process, like it's this perfect thing which cannot be criticised and if only we could remove the obstacles that hamper it, it would lead us to a perfectly functioning society.

Thanks for all the explanations on how Fanon uses nationalism and how the modern right appropriated this kind of language, cause tbh reading that excerpt you provided made me feel uncomfortable more than once lol. At some point he says: "This new humanity cannot do otherwise than define a new humanism both for itself and for others. It is prefigured in the objectives and methods of the conflict. A struggle which mobilizes all classes of the people and which expresses their aims and their impatience, which is not afraid to count almost exclusively on the people's support, will of necessity triumph." I don't know about you, but the first thing this reminded me of was the fascist notion of nationalism being more important than class in a struggle, the same rejection of class and embrace of national identity that Mussolini did after becoming disillusioned from socialism.

First patreon I've ever forked out for. The money is nothing compared to what you have all helped me to learn. Enjoying this episode so far although I've noticed that when Pills says "Sartre" he says it like a North American would. But when he says "Baudrillard" he generally tries to say it the way French people would. What's with that?

i would just spend it on drugs anyway

This is to the thanks in the description: Of course Pills. I’m sure all of us would rather spend money here than buy a few more commodities. Y’all make awesome content and it’s worth the money spent. I wouldn’t say it’ll never be the type of gig where you can do it full time. Most people just don’t know about theory. Like in the US, you get socially ostracized for stuff like this unless you’re in certain areas. Some places you might even be physically attacked. But things are slowly changing I think. Just keep grinding and don’t lose faith.

The chiefs aren’t elected so it isn’t democratic? God forbid indigenous people make their own choices of government… I am unaware of which Canadian tribe they were talking about but my tribe elects our chiefs.
