Pill Pod 137 - Groomer Mythology
Added 2023-08-30 00:43:48 +0000 UTC
I take ownership of everything we put out, and hope it's good, but this episode is imho one of our top-shelf hits. Erik and Pills break down the myth of grooming, childhood, sexuality and the semiotic systems which produced them.

The Jesuit Monastery conspiracy you mentioned at the end of the episode marks a plot point in Pynchon’s Mason and Dixon!

In his later years, Freud attempted to expand the scope of his project, sure. But others had already done it better than he did and would continue to do so, such as with Lacan. My problem is less with psychoanalysis as a whole than with freudianism specifically. And to pretend that Freud and psychoanalysis isn't the very definition of "bourgeois psychology" is laughable.

Critiques of the psychosexual stages and the Oedipus complex aside, Imagine thinking that this is the extent of Freud and psychoanalysis' contribution to psychology. Maybe there's a reason both feature so heavily in pretty much all the humanities and social sciences, and why mainstream bourgeois psychology keeps trying to downplay it.

Do an episode on Agamben's new Pinocchio book? He touches on lots of the myths y'all have been engaging with, plus, it's a fun read. (It's super short, 100% an afternoon read)

There's a lot of freemasonry where I live. I've known of a wealthy drunk mason completely get away with causing a fatal car accident, and knew a kid who got caught driving with a lot of drugs and avoided jail, whose wealthy dad was a mason. A pervy teacher in one of my schools was a mason, he'd lean in a bit too close to the girls and rest his hand on their backs, I hope that was the extent of it. And there was one cantankerous old mason who liked to threaten people with assassination
The freemasons' layered hierarchies of secrecy are fertile grounds for rituals, myths and conspiracy theories. It's disappointing to consider that the secret is that there is no secret, it's just a bunch of old men driven to pay for friendship and a sense of superiority, creating extra mechanisms for capital to corrupt power structures

That's too sad. Nuns and childcare, an often disastrous combination

Bambi is pretty traumatic early on… death of his mother in the clearing… run bambi run………..
Yes, we can’t overlook Wordsworth, Freud and Carroll as both part of the historical/ mythical trend of the emergence of ‘childhood’ as well as contributing much to that myth. For ex, Gifric (montreal psychoanalytic treatment center for psychosis) shifts the emphasis in psychoanalysis from early childhood to adolescence (also a constructed category btw… w the moral panics from 30s and 50s about juvenile delinquents)…
And on the liberal side, the ‘evil’ is kind of a’ toxic masculinity’ that is a threat to children…..
Brechts first play ‘Baal’
Schreber returns… something of a ‘psychotic structure’ in conspiracy thinking.

It is a great episode. Though I wish academics and theorists will get away from Freud. Having been a therapist for more than a decade, I've never seen anyone who's suffering can be attributed to an unresolved oedipal complex or a failure to progress appropriately through an Oral developmental stage. In fact, people are messed up quite often because they're fathers either fucked them or wanted to, not the other way around.

Ohh when I was 7 a nun made me do a campfire so I can burn all my pokemon stuff because some priest said on the radio that pokemon was a creation of the devil, those were like my only toys in there:(, I started doubting hard in the existence of god from that day 😂

Phrase I did not think I'd be hearing today, because I don't think I've ever heard it:
"child masterbator" 🤣
Loving the myth series and this one too.

I get so nervous when Victor is absent. He acts as such a grounding force for when Pills and Eric ramble about things I can never hope to understand.
I’m happy to announce this was very comprehensible and super enjoyable.
Thanks again guys!
