Pill Pod 138 - Myth of the Self I (Exclusive)

This is perhaps the most thorough myth of modernity--the self. Are we selves? What about language and semiotics? What about bathroom doors? Do air fryers live up to the hype? All this and more!
Same thing with the bathrooms at my uni. Two unisex bathrooms but one has a urinal so we all kinda self assign based on that lol.

Great stuff, really enjoying this arc. Loved that bit on how self care is tautological because who is taking care of the self?

100%. Figures like Roger Griffin and Umberto Eco have studied fascism throughly enough to give fascism a clear definition, delineating it’s core features. Although tbf on Victor, MANY people from all over the political spectrum have been using the term so loosely for so long that it’s become one of the freest floating signifiers of our time. That said, however, Trump is a fascist, and so are many of the right wing parties winning elections all over Europe these days.

i hope u wont keep to this format too many more times. I don’t think it works well. Seems ‘dumbed down’ and lacks any rigor except for a few inspired irruptions.
Dictatorship of the proletariat. Soviet revolution. Probably the only example of a modern (theory of) society where the individual is not the center…obviously the project failed. Still, Marx attempting to go beyond the individual and beyond ownership and private property as fundamental to individualism. But anyway, didnt find this episode nearly as insightful as ur usual. Hope this is a not a fatique of sunjects. Subjects as topics not selves. philosophical topics/concepts/ authors…. etc. . Unless u r gearing this to undergrads. And maybe u r.

Great episode but yeah Trump is a fascist, i dont get the liberal centrist impulse to split hairs here. Hes the symbolic figurehead of an ongoing fascist movement that has captured a major US party and the SC. The Nazis were the culmination of a fascist motion passing through a society and people like liberal victor will ignore it until its already able to fulfill its promises. I know that liberals like checklists and delineated categories but fascism is a movement, its a radicalization process that points in a general direction and uses a societies myths against scapegoats within that society.

The ancient traditions in very different parts of the world had always made the soul a composite thing. The Egyptian Ba'Ra,Ka for example. Liberalism truly did spring from Christianity.

@Victor I had the exact thought, "this feels like you want to be more critical but have to speak like a cordial academic," when that part came up. Glad I'M not just hyper-confrontational seeing conflict even when it's not there
@Pills "it's the death drive of the subject to become an object." I blame you for the fact this sentence actually made sense to me

I think a cool way into this conversation, apart from Barthes' Mythologies, would be through Nietzsche and his critique that there's no 'doer behind the deed.' Critiquing the self via grammar. But also, being a broken record, through the book organism-oriented ontology by Audrone Zukauskaite. My buddy is doing his PhD at Purdue and Dan Smith is his dissertation advisor; Dan recommended this book and I found it super interesting. I think it's 100% up y'all's alley!

Right after i was listening and thinking, “hmm the self is not what we think it is… but could that be right? what is it than? “ Victor says, “the self is not what we think it is” And I’m like “oooooo!” out loud lol
