Pill Pod 149 - Gothic Horror: Edgar Allen Poe & The Fall of The House of Usher

Inspired by the new Netflix series, we read some Poe short stories and compared them to their TV adaptation. Victor Hainagiu (aka Litvic aka @horatiovictor) came on to help us put gothic horror into historical context.

Updating romanticism resonates. Emotion is a derisive term but it way overpowers rationality, I'd say it's our main filter. Seduction.

The fact that I am only comment number four doesn’t bode well but i’d just like to add one more to the “yay literature” column. I always enjoy these episodes.

My only major disagreement is Victor saying the series wasn't hamfisted, when in my opinion its hamfistedness is the major flaw of the show. The final episode in particular has at least three (might be more I'm forgetting) different monologues describing the greed of the billionaire class and how that money could be put to better use. Verna's monologue with Pym, her monologue with Lenore, and DuPont's monologue to their tombstones. Along with the equally hamfisted recitation of The Raven, (I think the same episode had Verna reciting ANOTHER poem directly before her monologue) and the scene of Roderick Usher staring at all the dead bodies he'd created falling from the sky - oh and then there's ANOTHER monologue by Madeleine in same episode, although admittedly at least not retreading the exact same ground as the others, the final episode seemed to beat the themes over the audience's heads with a sledgehammer. I think this final episode is what makes me agree with Pills critique towards the end, the showrunners seem to think the audience is so stupid they needed four monologues in the final episode to explain the horror of the billionaire class, which while obviously a valid target, is one of the most obvious and discussed topics in our culture, so it seems at least plausible that the uncertain existential dread of Poe would be far too vague for the show's intended audience.

I canceled all subscriptions a month or three ago, but back on this prescription. First and only Patreon I have. Been listening to the pod lately and was hype to hear Lit. Vic. back on. 1 vote for permanent usage of moniker Lib. Vic. 😂
