Pill Pod 106 - Situationist International (Exclusive)

You picked it we shipped it. We are kicking off a series about the inventors of "the Spectacle"—the panEuropean cross-disciplinary theory/art/media/marxist collective known as the Situationist International.

We talk quite a bit about Asger Jorn, so a couple minutes on image search of his paintings might be helpful here.

Idk if that's subversive or not, but it gave me a chuckle. So thanks for that

I love that Debord just fell into this semi-criminal circle, drank excessively, and never worked. He was a real one. Committed. Have y’all ever watched the film version of society of the spectacle with his French narration?

Walker Goff

Y’all can take vacations? Must be nice.

Walker Goff

I often oversimplify modern/contemporary art into an untethering of technical mastery and concept. Asger Jorn is a really interesting example of interaction between these categories. The concept side of art obviously overlaps with theory and philosophy, which I find particularly inspiring to get to from the art side. So Pills on art is definitely something I'm keen for more of

Western modernity was already being influenced by newly translated Eastern texts. Coming at a critical time. I know jack about Husserl, but I think he intuited something missing in Western culture. The focus on the object and the observer. That a stillness could be used for real knowledge in the world. A way of natural phenomena. Being in the world.

I heard the word "Situationist" bantered about in various other books and essays, but I never got an idea past the focus on art. The phenomenological approach seems a sign of the times. This aesthetic reaction against modernity using the available tools that have not quite been digested by consumer culture yet.

"you can't overthrow capitalism and expect everyone to know what to do" REAL. This is one of Zizek's points as well, that nobody talks about what happens the day after the revolution is successful. IDK if you can say that Debord was all about just early Marx tho, since he published SotS exactly 100 years after Capital and the literal first sentence is a total homage to the first sentence in Capital, replacing "accumulation of commodities" with "accumulation of spectacles." Looks like it's going to be a great series, looking forward to more!

If you mean the kung fu movie they mentioned, it’s called Can Dialectics Break Bricks? it’s on YouTube

Oh hell ya, been hoping for this for a minute!

Pills and the guys, go on instagram and look up spellingmistakescostlives. It's a perfect contemporary example of an attempt at subversive public art. Not confined to the platform but affecting people's ordinary life space.

19:30 sauce please? You guys could probably do a pretty good dub/mystery science theatre adaptation of some current media Per Rehearsal at the end, I do get the feeling from this as well as Nathan for You that he is subverting. If you dig down past the absurdity he often puts you in stark naked contact with people in a very sincere way. It is probably the first reality TV show to touch reality, like deep, emotional, shared human experience and suffering reality.

ageOfBumFires

Where can I find that?

Plastic Pills

I read somewhere that debord was a Cia asset, pills might wanna look into that
