Pill Pod 113 - Slavoj Zizek Woke Council

Zizek allegedly wrote an article on the problems of wokeness and we argued about it. Reactionary? Transphobic? Trolling? We don't agree.

All that said, I'm glad you posted the conversation. I'd rather be discussing this here than just watching this topic being used as a boogieman for conservative politics.

I appreciate that everyone in this context is reaching for some kind of intellectual integrity, but it does seem like Pills is the only one who has any knowledge of (or contact with) trans healthcare. Puberty blockers are given in numerically rare cases where it seems likely that a young person identifies as trans, yet it is socially/culturally too early to begin a gender reassignment. For a group of people who are harassed and murdered at rates multiple times higher than average, this is life saving healthcare. It allows for an adult transition (should the person decide to continue this process) that does not mark them as having gone through a male puberty (particularly if they identify as transfemale). If I'm going to play the other side of the argument, why are we *not* giving adolescents access to gender reassignment earlier, and instead *only* offering them puberty blockers? Could it be because we are cowed by a majority culture that would label this as irresponsible (rather than responsive)? The truth is we delay development for almost all LGBTQIA people, who are forced to wait until they have greater autonomy from cis-hetero authority systems (including often their families) to actualize their lives. I wonder if people would have such reactions to medical care (let's say for example cosmetic surgeries for children with "deformities", or corrective surgeries for children with genital abnormalities) that would prevent people from having to suffer socially and in terms of actualizing their life potential later? We bring our (majority) culture wisdom to these issues when making decisions for children generally. We do not say, well this is the body you were born with, we are all meant to struggle, let your unconscious work it through. But we refuse to bring LGBTQIA wisdom to healthcare.
