Pill Pod 125 - Eyes of Reason II (Exclusive)

Part two of Pills' genealogy of the visual metaphors in the guts of philosophy. This one goes through Kant, Nietzsche, and Derrida, each of whom argue metaphoric language is more than a nuisance to reason, but the only reason that anything means anything at all.

I follow a number of people and I may not be as disappointed about it as some, but Ashley Frawley claimed recently that her motivation for the James Lindsey interview was the algorithm. That if you search Marxism, Lindsey will be one of the first to pop up. That could even be true. I don’t watch right wing channels but do to interest in the topic of “Marxism” I even saw his public speech on “Marxism” in my suggestions. It was strange. Her interview was for sure more of a chummy conversation, and not surprisingly received criticism for that as she should expect to. From her account the convo was not meant for the “already converted” but meant to try to make clear that whatever “wokeness” is, it is not Marxism. On another note I appreciate a lot of what Frawley does for various reasons, but mostly getting me thinking. I’ve been tarrying with some thoughts and dilemmas introduced by her videos “communist, fascist or ceo” where you have to guess the quote source. And her points in doing so have really gotten me thinking about democracy and the “masses” and all that vs fascist distrust in democracy and the “masses”. As I have been studying ideology and the unconscious, and Pills videos on baudrillard, it really has me thinking what role those play. But I see what she appears to be doing with that interview, and you can of course agree or disagree with it or see the limitations. I’m not saying all criticism is fair criticism but I don’t know what she was expecting. I watched part 1 but decided not to become a patron for part 2 of the interview.

Fun episode! The brain is an isomorphism hunting machine, after all - yet another metaphor that stands in for a definition. 😛 I get into arguments about the extent of literalness and metaphoricity in STEM all the time, so this was a very nice and comforting listen.

The nothing-burger person ate it listening to Todd McGowan on Why Theory!

Great episode, definitely need to hear it again to grok that Kant stuff properly. And as much as I'd love to have more Peirce, I'm close to finishing Graeber's Bullshit Jobs, so it would be incredibly cool to have an episode or 2 on him tbh. In this book he actually provides credence to Varoufakis' concept of technofeudalism (remember that?) through the way bullshit managerial and administrative jobs have proliferated like kings and their vassals.

I'm commenting while in the process of listening, and I just got to the point where you went to the etymology of metaphor, which reminded me of a recent trip I made to cyprus and I was awed to see that the word in Greek for transportation, as in public transportation, was metaphora. Not only that but exit is exodos and service is lithourgia. I came to the same reflexion that so much of our language can only be refined because we take very simple words from other languages and repurpose them to mean something more complex. Metaphor might mean this figure of language in basically all European languages influenced by Greece, but in modern Greek it means transport, moving something to another place.

I'd guess Baudrillard is talking about Palestine, everyone born pre-defined into an inescapable hostage/terrorist binary. To re-apply that structure to general debate is some dark genius.

Love Ash Frawley that episode was one of my favourites. But yeah idk even back then she was a big Christopher Lasch fan and friends with Aimee Therese

Just as a side note an episode on William James could also be cool

This may not be a good platform to announce this, but Matt Walsh has hired me as an editor for his next documentary: "what is a beer?"

Another great episode! I chuckled when Eric said that he thinks he understands Derrida but has trouble trying to articulate what he is saying (around 45ish minutes in). I feel the same way when trying to explain him to people, or even myself frankly. I always end up going "what the fuck am I talking about" lol
