As someone from southern, non-mainland Europe, I can say that while a lot of subjectivity is superficially still tied to culture, the ties have become incredibly loosened of late, where they’re used as referents linguistically, but by an increasing number of people for whom culture is about as critical to their lifestyles and subjectivities as it is for your average American. The American bourgeois fantasy is king here now as it feels like it is everywhere else - the idea of the materially successful (usually) male who can afford a certain level of carefree consumerism and most importantly, is able to use images of himself to be semiotically associated with these signs of consumerism and luxury, all the while portraying himself as a happy, content and complete subject, the ideal everybody should be emulating. If you can intersperse these images with “deep” quotes or posts, youth absolutely perfect.

America was always this escape for Europe. America allowed Europe to dominate the world by taking on all of Europe's gravitas and dumping it. It allowed capital to avoid confronting it's contradictions by giving away free land.

Didn't Kafka write Amerika without having left Europe? And it's about a kid with no real agency or sense of self preservation getting seduced?

Gov. Jerry Brown dated Linda Ronstadt. Does that count?

And damn lonely too.

California had two celebrity governors, Reagan and Schwarzenegger, unless I’m forgetting more lol. There’s really been a lot of celebrities that have run for office in the U.S haven’t there? The two mentioned, Trump, Ye, Oprah, Caitlyn Jenner, Kari Lake, Herschel Walker, probably more.

I live in the States (in Texas) so this was a nice refresher of what it is about the West that is so alluring. Texas in particular sells itself (especially to the United Kingdom, for some odd reason) as still being a place of barbed wire and horse-ownership. Despite the fact that our sky looks just as large and imposing as anything in the Midwest, somehow ours is even better. I can assure you that there is nothing out here except for the same gas stops you see in every other state: McDonalds, Burger King, Starbucks, Denny's/IHOP/Waffle House. There IS something exhilarating about the way the U.S. obliterates every touchpoint to history or culture, until I suppose you step into debates with rhetoric, which has achieved a kind of Meme-like virality. Thank you for providing content about Americans for us Americans. It's pretty much all we see or care about. :)
