Baudrillard's Theory of Disneyland & Hyperreality

I thought I had to revisit the Disneyland/Hyperreality distinction, mainly as a correction to the commonplace error that I have heard repeated in conversations, and in other YT videos and on podcasts—namely, Disneyland is not hyperreal! It is a defense of the reality principle. Hope you enjoy and the lectures will return shortly now that this time-sink is out of the way.

This one bothers me: Because the pandemic was real, we see reality. Was the pandemic real or The Real, in a lacanian sense, that it shattered our view of reality (mirror? it is all very confusing) and we labour the put back all the pieces.

Oh cool I had totally misunderstood the term hyper real, this was really good thanks

The ridiculous surrealism of existence drives us into the ideal

Because democracy is not on Change.org, it must exist in the voting booth Because passion is not in the corporate office, it must exist in the painter's studio

Because real music is not on the radio it must be in concert Because meaningful work is not in an Excel spreadsheet it must be in manual labour

Don't know if this is the type of example you're looking for, but here goes. Neuschwanstein, the castle that the Disney castle is based on, was made to look like a fairytale castle. It never served as a fortification. It's merely devorative, and it's design was already outdated by the time it was built. It's also built within spitting distance of a "real" castle, made to fortify the german kings summer estate. I thinl this is all true, but honestly haven't checked

Wait is it because being is not in being, it must be in nonbeing?

Got another one. because human is not in nature, it must. be in society.

This helps enormously! It explains why I experience so much freedom to carry out speculative art projects in this hyperreal world. I present these projects as real, concealing their artificial nature: the reactions are always very encouraging, and they thank me for the insight I provide :-) Both they and I, though both in the hyperreal, seem to exist in different worlds. Thanks to you, Baudrillard’s insight creates even more space than I already felt I had!

Because revolutionary subjectivity is not in situations, it must be in events.

This reminds of a video of live news feeds on 9/11 as it happened. One person called in and said, "it's like something out of a movie." Then a bit later another person called and said, "if you gave this as a script to Hollywood producers it would be rejected for being too unbelievable." Funny that comparing it to a movie seemed to be the go to thing, no matter which direction it was. So was 9/11 another Disneyland, or somehow a breakage? Like, "Because real terrorism and war happen over there, we must be safe in America" but that gets broken, 9/11ed. And then going to war "over there" is reasserting that we're in control and not in danger of randomly being blown up.
