Pill Pod 162 - Walter Benjamin: The Work of Art in the Age of Technological Reproduction (Patron Exclusive)

We were surprised we hadn't done an episode on this yet, but Erik and Pills take on probably the most referenced critical theory text, Benjamin's Work of Art essay, a version of which you will find attached, or get it here. Thank you for your contribution to our participatory media production

Great episode guys - loving WB. I do think, though, Victor does actually β€œadd to” rather than β€œsubtract from” the conversations in most situations.

He has some great takes on photography in other essays, too. He was kind of a pioneer in the theory of photography.

Heard this for the third time now, such a great and insightful episode! Would you say that Benjamin believed in the secret, in that given the death of the aura and total democratization of art would lead to the masses revolting, but that what TikTok has shown is that there never was revolutionary potential in the proletariat? Oh and I second Zachary, it was great having a lib free episode for once, reminded me how much I dig the dynamic between you 2 and how it was nice not having to roll my eyes once every 15 minutes or so because of some bad lib take

Yeah they did a Rancier episode a while back

anacidcommie

Terrific! Enjoyed the absence of Victor.

Benjamin's time witnessed post realism styles taking art back into the cave, a lizard room outside of time where merging archetypal silhouettes subvert the foundations of reality. I don't know if he was working on a vaccinination or campaigning against anaesthesia but it's a pharmakon. Although it is a prophetic style guide for journalism

Victor getting cooked at the end πŸ˜‚

Great episode!

Have you guys ever done an episode on Ranciere? The whole thing about a mode of production distributing the possibility of expression while neutralizing the possibility of change seems to segue into his Partition of the Sensible. I don't know, though. It's been a while since I read it.

War as means of mobilising the masses seems very relevant now with the recent rhetoric from EU leaders.

Zadine Lenin

I was (supposed to be) working while listening to this. Is that praxis?

Zadine Lenin

I was collecting government disability checks while listening to this

John Stuart Pills

I was vacuuming while listening to this

glasnost

The amount of times I have had to read this in my photography undergrad!
