Pill Pod 167 - Schopenhauer on Why Christianity is the Worst Religion

We look at Schopenhauer's comparison of various religions' metaphysical explanations for suffering, and why conservative celebrities are converting to the dumbest one.

OK, sorry, but when one dude said he disliked dune 2, I was like, Nah, I gotta get the membership to write about my reaction to what he said.(I didn't need to but did anyways) Hahahaha, pills did name all movies I loved, so it was a relief someone has taste lol. I'm glad I subscribed, though Thoroughly enjoy this pod as a layman in philosophy.

I would like more. What happened to Will as thing-in-itself? What happened to the notion of an overall will and ourselves just being instances of this (by way of our representation mechanism)? What I like about Schopenhauer is the idea of Will as bigger than ourselves, "it is Will's world and we live in it." Nature/Will feeds on itself. Will as blind, irrational force. This helps put current events and culture in perspective. What happened? This notion seems to have been diluted over time. Where did it go or why did it not persist?

Pills the educator.

I anticipated this episode would be painful but is was very pleasurable.

There is no problem of evil. Modern Christianity isn't Christianity, it's some weird anthropocentric emergence from bad interpretations of language. The original teachings of jesus, if he did exist, were from genuine mystical experience, which is the same in humans throughout all of time. The difference comes in the philosophical implications of how to live a good human life once you "know" our individuality is all a game simulated by our brains.

This episode filled my god-hole.

Where it's not a cynical move, maybe the antiwoke converts are unconsciously going back into Christianity to try to unpick the remaining traces of guilt and shame loaded into Western values around the god-hole's messy edges? They're stuck at a contradiction, internalising original sin until Jesus comes back and says "let he who is without sin cast the first stone (but if the victim is a minority then fuck it)"

I'm sure this will come as a big surprise, but BIG fan of this episode 😄. Nailed the closing line, per Schopenhauers reason to be compassionate, charitable, patient: the taken to heart realization that every being we interact with is suffering with us simultaneously. And that you yourself are as well (self compassion). I think anyone who really straps on those metaphysical goggles with vigor for 24hrs will not be able to unsee it. This is the source of Buddhist compassion. It's a truly revolutionary world view.

Zoroastrianism mentioned 😃

There’s also a similar, parallel tradition of “decadent” movement writers and artists converting to Catholicism

Great episode! Again, I’m reminded of the French far right, specifically Acción Francaise. Their founders, Charles Maurras and Maurice Barres, were open agnostics who argued for state Catholicism on a “pragmatic” basis (by pragmatic I mean the notion that a “nation” needs a common belief system, ecumenical hierarchy, and institutionalized system of moral education- I think both ended up converting on their deathbeds.) An element of this functionality is religion’s capacity to differentiate nations- ie differentiating loyal “French” from disloyal “meteques” or “anti-France.” This informed later iterations of fascism- particularly in Spain, Portugal, Croatia and Romania. Yet again, American new right figures can’t even claim originality. Every “edgy” or “dangerous” idea they come up with is just a retread of what a racist Frenchman or German believed 130 years ago.

The irony is that the most effective and useful counters to pessimism come from outside the Judeo-Christian framework. Daoism, Spinoza, Ch’an/teintai/pure land/zen Buddhism, Sufiism, various "indigenous" religions, Nietzsche, and Camus all sort of prove pessimism to be narrow in its framing of life. And, yes, even Islam offers better panacea to the problem of evil. I think part of the reason why Westerners continue to adhere so fervently to Judeo-Christendom is because we actually need Evil to be a real thing, and we need a God who tells us it's just to do any evil we can think of to the evil thing. If "wokeism" is "evil" then I'm justified in doing whatever evil I can think of to it. If Islam is "evil" I can punish it in any way I please. If communism is evil, then all bets are off. If we start thinking in terms outside of "evil" then we're sort of required to act responsibly and, dare I say, even sympathetically to those who are different than I am. And the West has long found that proposal to be the most evil thing of all.

Never read Schopenhauer, except, of course, this article. Do pieces of W&R.

So when Vonnegut says "I hope that we'll meet again in a world of peace and freedom in the taxi cab if the accident will". In Slaughter House Five is he referencing Schopenhauer?
