Concept Vlog - Abstract Labour (Capital I)

Let's look at translations of Capital and get as far as abstract labour! "Human labor-power in its fluid state, in other words, human labor, creates value but isn’t itself value. It becomes value in its coagulated state—in an objective form."

Loved it!! The more of the book you’ll be motivated to get through, the better for us! Thanks for this, you really found an intriguing way of introducing Marx’ idea of value for us!

Caroline von Taysen

Capitalism generates value. It’s all about the expansion and accumulation of value that can turn into more value, ie, capital. Overproduction is when you have too much value that can’t be recycled into more value through the process of exchange, when value is tied up into commodities that are not sold, and so the commodity capital cannot become money capital which can then be used to purchase variable and constant capital, which are both needed to produce the surplus value, which is how profits are generated. Money is the universal equivalent, the commodity that is a direct representation of the exchange value of all other commodities.

Loved this, especially the whole delineation/genealogy of value thing. I hope you keep doing these. At some point I hope you have an episode on sign value and what this concept adds to Marx’s conception of value, and how Baudrillard deviates from it.

The notion of "beans and bullets" is based on the use value of these things. Scarcity changes value. So overproduction creates more exchange value? A inflation of value? (that covers over the general devaluation) and to represent this inflation of value, money is needed?

In your previous episodes, you talked about "post modernity" and the pure exchange value of images. I'd love to see you tie it all together sometime.

I actually am working on a short paper on a process philosophy of ideological interpellation. I’ve been thinking about the same question you raised about a process theory of value. I do know that the attainment of value is what drives God/creativity and concresence in Whitehead. So there must be a dialogue to be had between W and Marx.

Only two minutes in. Ashamed to admit, I'm yet to read this 😬. I tried some years back but I get stuck on the extensive price per weight lists. I'll give myself an end of month deadline. If you felt strongly motivated to cover the whole book in greater depth, you could always do a chunk every couple of months. Just a thought
