You shouldn't forget Gang-Tae is always suppressing himself and what he wants and Mun Yeong is the only one who can bring out the real him. That's kinda the whole point of the drama if you pay attention from the beginning. Besides all the other drama... its finding someone, anyone, who brings out the real you and let's you feel like it's okay to just be yourself. Faults and all.

The reason why Gang-Tae rang while smiling was not because he was getting to spend more time with her, but because for the first time in years he finally expressed his true feelings. If you've noticed before they kept saying that he shouldn't smile because it looked like the joker, meaning he looked sad with the corners of his mouth up, because he wasn't really happy. For the first time, he could actually be himself and not restrain himself so he was happy. All that comes from Ko Mun Yeong. And your comment about this is not Gang-Tae, reflects what everybody in his life saw and try to make him admit, you know Sang-Tae saying you should've restrained yourself, the other nurse saying the same thing and Juri telling him to say it was a mistake. When he said it wasn't, he was showing who he really is and his true feelings and he ran to Mun Yeong because she is the only one who sees the real him, the one under all the layers of restraint.

The reason he was so happy to be suspended was because he had been holding back his emotions for so long and had been stuck in that constant routine. Him taking that risk in hitting that guy was a new feeling for him. I think that is one of the qualities he likes in Ko Mun Yeong and that she brings that out in him. It is, in a way, out of character for him to people in his life but it reflects what he has been saying about how he does not express his desires.
