Villaneuve's DUNE

Thoughts on the DUNE remake? What are you looking forward to? What are you skeptical of? What do you hope will change significantly from the Lynch version?

Having read Dune, I think Villeneuve is the best choice of any current director to bring this script to the big screen. I think it is a smart move separating the book into two films since there is so much material. I am most looking forward to the following 3 things. First the political dynamics between the characters vying for power. I want to see more palace intrigue between House Atreides, House Harkonnen, the Fremen and the Bene Gesserit. Second I want to see a further exploration of the subtext between character relationships; often this is explored through internal monologues in the book but think that the talented cast is capable of showing their thoughts without saying it. I am most interested in seeing the relationship between Baron Harkonnen and Feyd Rautha. And third the production design. According to people working on this project, this is Lord of the Rings level world building. Having loved 2049, I can't wait to see what Arrakis looks like.

I think Villeneuve is the best pick of current directors for making Dune. Arrival is probably my favorite science fiction movie of the 2010s and Blade Runner 2049 was a worthy follow up to a classic. He is talented visually and knows how to generate the sense of wonder that would be necessary to capture the vast scope of Dune. I am sure this adaptation will be a well-constructed and visually impressive film. I have thought for a while though that Dune would be well-suited (if done properly) to more of a long-form episodic approach though. I could see a 10-part Dune streaming series really giving the complexity of the world and its characters and communities more chance to be fully realized.

Villeneuve is a filmmaker that is very consistent. I'm not always enamored with his work because I don't think he often has a very distinctive vision, but I always find his films pretty engaging and well-made. For me, he's like a better Nolan, same level of polish and craftsmanship but with a little more depth usually. I think he'll make a good film, probably a more successful adaptation of the novel than Lynch's version- and a visual feast I'm sure, but for some reason I don't feel like it will be anywhere near as memorable as David Lynch's DUNE.

I'm looking forward to at least a good movie. I hope it will have more substance, more clear and cohesive story than Lynch version. I think it won't be as visual interesting and atmospheric as Lynch version. Either way I'm optimistic.

Can't say I'm interested. Never read the book.

I hope he's able to tackle the religious themes of the book in a tasteful and thought provoking way. I know he'll have no issues handling the world and characters but some of the religious elements can be touchy by today's standards but I still think they should be explored.
