What movie scared you the most and why?

Comments

Audition. I wouldn't say it scared me as much as it greatly disturbed me. There are two scenes in that movie that are permanently scorched into my memory. The first scene is where she is feeding the man held captive in a bag a bowl of her own vomit - I had to look away because it made me want to puke. The second scene is where she is humming away as she is sawing off the protagonist's foot with piano wire while he is paralyzed - I was a bit too squeamish for that as well and just squirmed in my seat as she cut his foot off. They're not necessarily the scariest or most gory scenes in cinema but they will now live on in my memories permanently haunting me.

Ryan

For me its a tie between Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986). Every time one of those xenomorphs appears on screen I genuinely get scared. Whoever designed the creature is a genius!

Stephen

Vertigo. I never thought Jimmy Stewart could be so disturbing. Even though he's the victim of the story, the obsessive lust he develops over this fantasy woman in Kim Novak is borderline psychotic killer levels. Even in the final scene where he exposes her for her awful deeds, I'm more afraid for her safety than his even though she's the villain because he's so mentally unstable.

Wolfman Brandon

The Haunting still gives me the creeps! The subtly is what makes it very suspenseful.

Tony Moro

Was just about to mention the same film. A true horror masterpiece.

The Omen (1976). I remember watching it during my childhood and never forget eyes expression of Billie Whitelaw when she visits Lee Remick character, plus that eerie score by Jerry Goldsmith. These choral chants really set the tone for the movie, well deserved Oscar. Whats so great in Omen is that it builds tension on the atmosphere; music, scenography, presence of the characters rather than someone is stabbing a person where there's a lot of blood. A occult horror masterpiece.

Still to this day, the sense of dread I get watching The Shining is unmatched. It's probably a combination of the movie imprinting on me at a young age and manic pace of the third act but without fail I'm always shaken to my core with this sense of impeding doom. It's not a perfect horror movie but it's the most deeply affecting one for me.
