Added 2020-10-16 20:22:50 +0000 UTCI've decided to do a video soon where I go through my criterion collection. I don't have a ton because I'm not really a collector of movies or anything. Ever since streaming I never really saw the point of it. But I wondered, what some of your favorite criterion releases are and why?

2020-10-19 18:57:40 +0000 UTCThere's a lot but I'll mention two. Paris, Texas - great meditation of "the West", the dynamics between European and American cultures, father and son relationships, and loneliness. Probably Harry Dean Stanton's best performance. Second is A Man Escaped. There's nothing more I love than a good prison escape. A wonderful World War II story about hope in the face of despair. Vive la France

2020-10-17 07:02:53 +0000 UTCI found Two Days, One Night on Criterion and I never saw it before but I thought i would just buy cause I wanted to see it. I took that risk and it paid off cause that is a very beautiful movie and the ending had a good payoff I think. I also have The Thin Red Line on Criterion and i love the artwork and the movie was such a different kind of war movie. Its was both peaceful and intense at the same time.

2020-10-16 22:17:53 +0000 UTCSalò or 120 days of sodom by Pasolini, due to the fact that now adays it almost impossible to find a *new* bluray copy of it because of its notorious history. Just like the novel by Marquis de sade, the film might soon be impossible to purchase of watch so for that reason I am grateful to own it. Movies as such have a massive imprint in cinema because there has never been a film that is so controversial but also very allegorical. Many despise the film for its heavy sexual and violent subject matter but to me it always seemed meaningful and powerful. May I also add that every shot looks like a beautiful, poetic, painting.

2020-10-16 22:15:59 +0000 UTCMy personal favorite for now is probably Sweet Smell of Success (1957) by Alexander Mackendrick. It was one of the first movies I saw for the first time on the Criterion Channel that really meant something to me. Great script, great performances, and an incredibly cynical look at the news/media business. It would definitely work as a double feature with A Face in the Crowd. Side Note: I also love the dated aspect of the plot revolving around a smear made in the newspaper about one of the characters being a "pothead" and a "socialist." Sounds like a good guy to me lol

2020-10-16 21:39:01 +0000 UTCMy Dinner with Andre by Louis Malle. It has fantastic interviews with Wallace Shawn and Andre Gregory. Gregory made an amusing statement about the movie having two men having dinner together and talking the whole film and they never mention sex. Siskel and Ebert were absolutely right about this film. It's a one of a kind that only gets better the more you watch it.

2020-10-16 20:28:48 +0000 UTCI found Y Tu Mama Tambien by Alfonso Cuaron through the collection and it's become one of my favorite movies. The three characters are written so wonderfully, it explores sexuality and growing up in a way that really resonates with me and it's gorgeous to look at and really captures the Mexican countryside in a beautiful way. There's also these political undertones that add a lot of texture to the movie. A perfect road trip movie that emotionally wrecks me every time I watch it.
