Let's reverse it! Name a great acting performance in an otherwise bad movie and why. This one should be easier. XD

Raul Julia from Street Fighter 1994 too easy! 🤣 He has all the qoutables for a cheesy movie villain.

Linda Fiorentino in Jade comes to my mind. It's not a terrible movie in my opinion, but her performance is the only thing about the movie that I love, it's pretty forgettable otherwise. I don't understand how this is Friedkin's favorite movie, as I watched Cruising around the same time and it was one of the most unfliching explorations of the queer experience I have seen.

Adam Gregus

Robin Williams in The Secret Agent (1996). This is an adaptation of Joseph Conrad’s novel about spies, anarchists, and a plot to detonate an observatory set in late 19th century London. Despite having a great cast— which includes Bob Hoskins, Jim Broadbent, and a young Christian Bale— and the classic source material to draw from, the film is actually not very good. It’s long on atmosphere and short on the rich ambiguity of the book. Worst of all, and this is remarkable considering the plot is about a bomb set to go off, the film is rather slow and boring. But Williams, who appears unbilled and is only in a handful of scenes, absolutely owns the movie. He gives a chilling performance as the most vicious and nihilistic character in the film, an anarchist bombmaker who wears an explosive device on his vest to keep the police at bay. Even if you’re familiar with his darker characters from Insomnia and One Hour Photo, you never would think that Williams has it in him to play a character like this, a forerunner to the Joker in The Dark Knight, who wants to kill as many people as possible with the bombs that he makes. When he’s onscreen, which is not often enough, you can’t take your eyes off of him.

Matthew Lillard as Shaggy in Scooby-Doo (2002). Linda Cardellini was also good as Velma, but the other main performances were phoned-in at best, the script was unfunny but also unhip, and the plot was almost non-existent (and to the extent it existed, it contradicted the normal rules of Scooby-Doo stories). In all, the film was pretty weak, even as just a silly popcorn movie based on a cartoon. But Lillard was terrific as Shaggy! It was uncanny, as if the relatable scaredy-cat had literally stepped out of the cartoon. His voice, mannerisms, and bearing were all just perfect. It's ALMOST worth watching the movie just to watch Lillard. ;)

Daniel Day-Lewis in Nine. Who the hell had the idea of turning Fellini’s 8 ½ into a musical? The songs are overblown and less Italian than an Olive Garden. But DDL is watchable and conveys charm and control in an otherwise lame movie.

Not certain if everyone will consider it "bad" but I thought Glass was nearly irredeemable with the exception of James McAvoy's performance. Obviously, he has a lot to work with since his character portrays various personalities but any one of them would've been compelling enough to support and otherwise meandering and uninteresting film. I'd also throw out Colin Farrell in Fright Night. A bad remake that never needed to happen, but he did a pretty good job being a charismatic villain.

Arthur Augustyn

John C Reilly in King Kong Skull Island. I was dragged to that movie by my gf at the time, and for the first half hour, or so, I HATED it, but then John C Reilly shows up and I'm laughing and having a good time. He single handedly bought our relationship another few months..... lol

Hands down, it is Angus Macfadyen in Warriors Of Virtue! The film was fuckin horrendous and laughable, and was a real mindfuck, but Angus was really great to watch! Not that his performance was good per se, but he did bring a decent amount of menace to the character, but. FUCK was he batshit INSANE and I LOVED IT!!

Tony Moro

Glenn Close as Cruella DeVil in 101 Dalmatians. Forget about Emma Stone. This is the real live action Cruella. One of the greatest scenery chewing performances that elevates a mediocre movie which is sadly more than Disney live action remakes have today. She basically redefines the character with a Norma Desmond persona while still maintaining the core of what originally made the character so enjoyable. Go watch the scene where she rants to the animals in the barn that have been stopping her from catching the puppies. It's overacting at it's finest.
