Alright. Let's finally have....the discussion.

Okay fellow Sopranos fans. It's time to discuss the trailer for the prequel that was released earlier today. What are your initial thoughts?

Comments

The ending is perhaps the greatest ending in the history of television for me. And the show is by far my favorite show.

Deepfocuslens

I should probably watch The Sopranos, I've never really watched it. I heard about the ending and it turned me off a bit.

Jestergambit

At least in this case it’s a prequel, so he probably doesn’t feel he is messing up anything with the Sopranos. Not like trying to do a sequel now and all of the sudden AJ actually wants to be in the mob or something

Jim Barnes

I think Jim makes an excellent point about Hollywood and the nature of it for sure. But at the same time, knowing David Chase and the rebel that he is, it doesn't seem in character with who he is.

Deepfocuslens

Even if Jim Barnes is right (and I think he is) about David Chase not being able to get anything greenlit other than this film because of its value as an IP, I still can’t believe that the man who ended his series with such an audacious cut to black would steer so readily into convention.

Bennett Oliver

thats a good point Jim. if its not a superhero movie, Disney property or some other type of spectacle-film, its going straight to VOD nowadays.

Ryan

So..........2 and 1/2 hours of fat Italians eating lots of pasta and choking dudes from the backseat? 😬🤷🏻‍♂️

Tony Moro

I agree fully. But for me...my expectations were always low.

Deepfocuslens

Haha yeah. I was not a fan of this casting decision. And it appeared nearly exactly as I suspected.

Deepfocuslens

yep

Deepfocuslens

I think it speaks to the movie business right now. This is probably the only movie David Chase could get made — existing intellectual property with a built-in audience.

Jim Barnes

I'm still curious why this movie is being made. Doesn't look or feel like Sopranos. Looks like it will be a fairly average mafia movie.

Ryan

I’ll definitely see the movie, but the trailer doesn’t “feel” like The Sopranos. Like Bennett said, looks like standard mob movie stuff, kid getting caught up in the life, etc.

Jim Barnes

I pretty much agree with everything Bennett said here. It didn't really alleviate my concerns with the casting. I can already tell the makeup with Farmiga is gonna be distracting.

Stephen

I just got really apprehensive about the movie. The real appeal of The Sopranos—what made it better than, say, Boardwalk Empire—was that it was more than a crime drama. It was an examination of modern American life through the consciousness of a man who happened to be a mobster. This movie, at least how the trailer presents it, looks like your standard gangster thriller, with the macho posturing and the shootings and the tough guys threatening other tough guys with nothing of the show’s complexity. Hopefully it’s just the packaging, but I’ve got lowered expectations now.
