It's between S. Dark and American Psycho 2. At least with American Psycho 2 I can understand it was a separate film renamed and partially reshot just to cash in on the name. Doesn't make it good, but it wasn't created as a sequel. S. Dark literally brings back the same actor that played Gyllenhaal's younger sister in the original and all for...for I don't know what. It bears such a small amount of relation to what the original movie was, love it or hate it. I can't for the life of me fathom who thought it was a good idea. Not only is it just an awful, terrible movie, but it squanders it's connection to the original by just doing absolutely nothing with it. There is kind of a weird time mechanic introduced, but it's not really like the first one. It seems like it was just, "Hey, let's make a really shitty movie, but we'll use this one actress from that kind of cult hit movie that's grown up a bit so we can market it as a sequel. But let's not put anything in the movie that actual makes it a sequel."

2021-08-11 21:56:00 +0000 UTCThere is no greater affront to the legacy of a film franchise than Prometheus and Alien: Covenant. Where do I start? There’s the stupidity of the characters, exemplified perfectly in the infamous “space cobra” scene. But even if everyone gained a few brain cells, it’s not like anyone’s remarkable enough for us to care about. In a feat of great storytelling, the lead character dies in between films and we don’t bat an eye. There’s the rules regarding impregnation and gestation established in the original films that Ridley Scott so blithely throws out, then throws out the new ones he sets up for the sake of plot convenience. But what it all really comes down to—what makes the films such abominations—is that there is no cinematic character less in need of a backstory than a space monster that kills people, let alone a backstory that attempts to evoke John Milton’s Paradise Lost and Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. That makes these films both dumb and hollowly pretentious. Even more so than George Lucas with his prequels, Scott has missed the mark on what made the original Ripley films so appealing.

2021-08-11 18:45:33 +0000 UTCI love the horror of Alien so seeing Aliens go more in an action direction with a lot more cheese was slightly disappointing. Certainly not a bad movie but that first movie is just heads and above its sequels cause of it's atmosphere and tension. None of the sequels have come close to capturing that original terror.

2021-08-11 13:51:54 +0000 UTCDark Knight Rises While the Dark Knight is one of those movies I feel I’ve grown out of as an adult. I still enjoy it, but the last act is an absolute mess. It mostly has to do with the way they rushed Harvey Dent’s character. The Dark Knight Rises is not only a continuation of the last acts problems, but an out right embarrassing disaster. it’s bloated, nonsensical and really displays Nolan’s worst tropes and instincts as a filmmaker, and don’t get me started on that cheese ball score from Zimmer. It quite simply shows a complete misunderstanding of Batman. It just makes me wonder if they showed restraint with Harvey Dent and made Two Face the villain , it really could’ve been a great to cap off the trilogy. Sure there are worse movies that are sequels, but this is the one I loath the most, because it really could’ve been something.

2021-08-11 12:51:02 +0000 UTCIt’s an obvious answer but The Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions really tarnished the genius of the original film by corrupting the franchise into amateur religious allegories. Even without that schlep, they’re just weaker films by regular merits. The first film made agents have such a palpable sense of danger but Reloaded opens with Neo effortlessly dispatching 3 agents at once while cracking jokes. There was no real tension anywhere in that movie. All style over substance (granted the stylistic decisions were pretty memorable/good). We also owe The Matrix films for the incredible annoying trend of splitting movies in two later taken on by Harry Potter, Hunger Games, and Twilight. Or maybe that was Kill Bill?

2021-08-11 11:45:57 +0000 UTCAll the Friday the 13th sequels. I don't understand why this franchise gets so much love from horror enthusiasts especially when the original wasn't good either. That's what upsets me so much about it. Bloody murders, fake out scares, and zero suspense is not horror. Also, every character ranges from boring to downright insufferable and the fact that the movies and the people who enjoy them endorse the violence against them is sick. You could give a 10 year old a video camera and he could go in his backyard and make the same unimaginative, tasteless, low level of quality with no money at all. Maybe there's worse out there but the fact that it's still looked at as an all time great horror series for doing less than nothing is depressing.

2021-08-11 08:10:05 +0000 UTCI seriously do not like The Dark Knight at all! This ruined everything that was actually working in Batman Begins. What that film did, while not perfect, but at the time captured the essence of Batman the best, basically adapting Batman: Year One, and actually inspired the hand-to-hand combat and stealth combat later in the Arkham games and made Batman a real terrifying force! Dark Knight just took all of that and flushed it down the toilet! Never once looked or felt like a Batman film, Bale was AWFUL! Ledger didn't play the character, he just blew shit up. The drama was downright pathetic, and it was way too long. Oldman was great though. Without Ledger, it's a very bland crime film.
