Added 2020-11-23 07:11:35 +0000 UTCSo now having rewatched both the first and the second close together after many years, I can tell you without question that for me the first is FAR superior to the second. As in, it's not even close. Just structurally, thematically, cinematically, everything is cleaner, more resonant, more well rounded in the first. Not really sure why so many prefer the second. But then again, I rarely understand humans or their preferences. XD

I would claim in some ways Part II is more sophisticated (in terms of its story) than the first. The first dove into the Corleone family dealings with the surrounding mobs, and the brutality and turmoil that goes with that. Groundbreaking at the time, sure, but there have been so many mob movies since that have dampened some of its allure. The second movie (though less focused than the first) gave some history to that context, but also dealt more with some political/business intrigue which can be a more sinister and backstabbing world....a world that an average man can relate to.

Although the first film is more memorable and culturally relevant (namely because of Marlon Brando’s performance), the second film was quite the follow up. Michael came into himself as a powerful and ruthless leader towards the end of the first film, but the second film took this to another level. Part II was an enduring story of betrayal, becoming a man, and loyalty to one’s family even if it means becoming a monster.

2021-08-12 21:53:26 +0000 UTCAs near perfect as the first is I feel it’s a bit on the surface compared to part 2 where I feel that once Michael has made that arc by the end of the first movie now the second part of the story really can open things up especially with seeing Vito’s upbringing and rise to power juxtaposed with the second part of Michael’s story and I much prefer Vito’s storyline in part 2 than part 1 as incredible as Brando is.
