Nolan Throws a Fit
Added 2020-12-11 17:46:25 +0000 UTCXD What do you guys think of Nolan's comments about the HBO Max and Warner Brothers deal?

Nolan is right that it was unfair and unwise to drop all the upcoming releases on streaming without consulting the directors first. I'm not familiar with contracts that what all goes into movie productions but aren't some actors/directors paid out based on box office performance? When it goes straight to streaming, that is money out of all their pockets and into the pockets of WB or HBO (or whatever streaming platform). Also, everyone is blaming Nolan over Tenet being released during the pandemic but Warner Bros is the one who made the decision. A multi-billion dollar enterprise like the WB is not being pushed around by one movie director. - they're the studio, they made the call. From their point of view, they wanted to swoop in and rescue the theaters which were all suffering due to the pandemic - we forget normal, everyday people work at these theaters, it's not just all about movie stars and movie directors getting paid.

2020-12-12 02:44:03 +0000 UTCI've always been a big fan of Nolan even though as I get older I enjoy some of his movies less and less, in particular the Batman films. His behavior over Tenet in general has almost made me not even want to see it. I've definitely lost a lot of respect for him over this. Like grow up dude your movie is not more important than what's going on in the world right now.

2020-12-12 00:17:51 +0000 UTCI would be more on his side if he didn't make Warner Bros drop his $200 million dollar blockbuster in the middle of a pandemic and show why movie studios need to explore other options than theaters, and this comes from somebody who works at a theater

2020-12-11 23:16:51 +0000 UTCOther than Covid keeping us away, the reason why Tenet failed was because the film looked very off-putting and that people are maybe catching on to Nolan’s films being way to confusing with really his lack of any coherent plots and MASSIVE LACK of actual CHARACTERS and heart! If we get back to normal so we can go back to the theaters, assuming they’ll still be in tact, we don’t just want the next big sequel, or superhero/franchise film, or the next big dumb Transformers-esque blockbuster full of action and effects but. I thing else, or Nolan’s confusing blockbusters. We’re waiting for that next Die Hard, NOT the next sequel but the next kind of action film like Die Hard NOT in terms of the similar plot but the next influential action film with great action but great STORY and characters and believability. John Wick was great but they weren’t blockbusters. Mad Max Fury Road is amazing but it was still too weird for people. Die Hard is that kind of well crafted action film where everyone gets on board. We need that next Back To The Future, we need that next Indiana Jones, or Jaws, or Star Wars in the vein of the original trilogy. We need that next well directed popcorn/blockbuster that really elevates movies and the genre, we need that MAGIC again. I think it was lost a decade ago honestly.

2020-12-11 20:54:31 +0000 UTCNolan is being more than just a whiny baby. He is raising a point that most people don’t recognize about this Warner Brothers decision. When Wonder Woman was going to streaming same day as the theatrical release, Warner agreed to payout the filmmakers and actors for their compensation for box office performance. Jenkins and Gadot both had agreements in their contracts for bonuses based the theatrical releases and Warner Bros honored that agreement. That did not take place with Dune, Suicide Squad, or any of the other Warner Bros releases that are going straight to streaming. In fact, all these directors and actors found out their films were going straight to streaming on the news. They didn’t even give a heads up from the studio let alone that they were getting ripped off.

2020-12-11 20:11:12 +0000 UTCOn the one hand I support his rant because, YES, aside from the “pandemic” and aside from obvious theater problems like people talking and the loud chewing, going to the theaters is usually almost always a special time. Going to a big movie or especially a movie on imax is always something exciting. I agree that we want this to come back. Streaming takes away from the magic of watching a movie. On the other hand, we always learn to adapt, and, honestly, over the last few years I don’t really enjoy going to the movies that much. Plus I hate the crowds. I hate it every time they cheer and we miss some of the dialogue, or people laughing at really dumb jokes, and whatnot, I won’t miss the theaters that much. Steaming really is so much easier and more relaxing. Plus, Hollywood is fuckin screwed and I don’t care about any future film anymore. I’ll see them but not with any excitement like before. So, very mixed on Nolan.

2020-12-11 18:17:55 +0000 UTCI was a theater employee for nearly six years through high school and college so I do feel bad for the individual people that will and have been affected by the changing industry but you're absolutely right. Change was coming, it wasn't address earlier and now a major event is forcing that change faster than anyone could have foreseen. As a movie watcher and consumer, I'm in support of WB's move.

2020-12-11 18:01:28 +0000 UTCYeah I feel like Nolan's behavior as it pertains to Tenet was kinda deplorable. So I don't have much sympathy here. And as I've said, all good things come to an end. The movie industry knew that they were struggling. They should've prepared for something like this a long time ago as I have been saying for years. But self-important Hollywood refused to consider the future of the movie industry. I think the HBO max deal is the best thing they could do at this point.

2020-12-11 17:57:14 +0000 UTCI find it really hard to empathize with Nolan because of the shit he pulled with Tenet. I do think the sudden move WB made without consulting the filmmakers they were affecting is scummy as hell but hearing Nolan whine about streaming in 2020 feels so old hat that I can't even take it seriously. Denis Villeneuve however I understand his vocal outcry since he is manning a much riskier project where his talent did take pay cuts in the hopes of a larger box office return and obviously this new plan will kneecap that severely.
