Videogames
Added 2021-01-08 19:53:29 +0000 UTCI'd like to get your opinion on the topic. I get asked about video games all the time and whether or not I play them. But figured I'd ask you guys if you were into them, which ones you enjoy, whether for nostalgic purposes or for current enjoyment. Also, what are some of your favorites, if any?

I was a gamer my entire childhood. However, I used to think that they were just a fun distraction. Even though I played Zelda and the Modern Warfare trilogy, I didn't see the artistry in them. It didn't help that I had strict parents who thought video games were unhealthy for me even though I was a straight A student in school. They forbid me to play any M rated games until late high school which by that point I started losing interest in games. Fast forward to my late college years when I first played Final Fantasy IV and VI (called II and III in the U.S.) on the late Wii Virtual Console and I was blown away by the mature and subtle storytelling. Especially, VI dealing with heavy topics such as mental health, mass genocide, pregnancy, and even suicide originally released on a console targeted towards young children. I've never looked at games the same way again. Then Final Fantasy X on Ps2, which had to grow on me at first because of the dated voice acting, actually got tears out of me with its story in the end. No game and definitely few movies ever get me weeping. It's become an important part of my adult life the same way movies are to me. My favorites would be FFX, Grand Theft Auto V, Metal Gear Solid 2, Telltale's The Walking Dead Season One, Zelda Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy 2, and Modern Warfare 2.

2021-01-08 21:50:50 +0000 UTCI can't say I'm as involved with video games as I was in my teens but I do still love getting lost in a game whether that be for its story, setting or mechanics. Recently Hades really blew me away with the way it was able to integrate story and gameplay mechanics so effortlessly. Plus it has a killer soundtrack and amazing art style. Another game I'm excited to revisit in a couple months when it gets its director's cut: Disco Elysium. Probably the best written video game ever made with another fantastic art style and these themes of existentialism and nihlism that manifest themselves in the gameplay in such interesting ways. It's not something I keep up with as much as I did when I had all the free time in the world but it's still an artistic medium I love and when I do find something that works for me it turns out to be something I love deeply. Just to throw in some of my all-time favorites: Portal 2, Thomas Was Alone, Journey, Hotline Miami, Rome: Total War, Minecraft just to name a few that I remember being significant to me.

2021-01-08 20:52:38 +0000 UTCVideo games were part of my childhood. I used to watch my oldest brother play 2D video games like Super Mario Bros 3, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Battletoads, and Donkey Kong Country (I have the fondest memories of those games). When I got older we would play multiplayer games like Perfect Dark, Halo, Madden, and Nba 2k. We would all be in one room and talk shit to each other, drink fruit punch, and eat Doritos. Those days are gone since everyone plays online now so I've given up on multiplayer games. When I was a teenager my favorites were Metal Gear Solid and Resident Evil 4 (I liked The Last of Us for similar reasons) since they were cinematic and I felt like I was playing through a 15 hour movie. While I still look fondly on those games I don't hold them in as high of regard as some of the games I've sought out in recent years. In the 1980s, Nintendo was a pioneer in the industry showing other developers what a substantive video game really is. At the time, games were similar to arcades where players would follow a linear path through each level to try and get a high score. The original Legend of Zelda (1986) changed that by introducing a game design that placed the player in a foreign world with little direction of what to do. The player would have to explore (in a non linear fashion) and solve puzzles in order to access new areas and progress in the game (similar to The Amazing Race, or an escape room). There were plenty of hidden secrets spread throughout the game, as well as enemies to defeat along the way. Once the player uncovered some secret or used the tools they gathered (or the lessons they learned) to solve a problem they would feel a sense of accomplishment. Here are some notable games that have used this design: The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Mario 64, Super Metroid (Metroid Prime), Tomb Raider, Resident Evil, Dark Souls. I have a high amount of respect for these games. They were in their prime around 1996-2003 but over time players have found that design not very accessible and have preferred more linear cinematic experiences that don't require them to think, and instead take them "on a theme park ride". Nowadays gaming has been hollowed out with online multiplayer and cinematic single player games dominating the market. I don't think there's been a truly groundbreaking game since Dark Souls (2011) which is considered by many (including me) to be the greatest game ever made.

2021-01-08 20:25:42 +0000 UTCI have kind of a weird mix of favorite games of all time list. I LOVE the first Last Of Us, and actually heard the second game, despite the awful writing, still has amazing gameplay. I’m a DIE HARD fan of the Uncharted games and Gears Of War, and really dig the action of the Call Of Duty Modern Warfare games. Legend Of Zelda: Link To The Past and Link’s Awakening are masterpieces!! Absolute masterpieces! One of my absolute favorites though is are no Super Bowl on the NES because as a sports game, as a football game, it’s damn near flawless!

2021-01-08 20:25:22 +0000 UTCI can admit nostalgia plays a part in majority of my favorite game choices. Once you have an unforgettable first experience with a game, it just stays with you forever. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was the first game that really made an impact and woke this sense of adventure in me. I still find enjoyment in replaying it from time to time and will always consider it one of the Greats.

2021-01-08 20:16:36 +0000 UTCYou know, I usually don't play video games. Not because I don't want to, just manage to live without them. Also don't have proper equipment for that. I was playing a lot during my childhood so it's nostalgic thing for me. I loved to play GTA: Vice City, spent many hours on that. My other favorites are Max Payne, Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, Tekken 3, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. Times when I had Playstation 1 and PC. Before that was Pegasus, I liked to play in such classics like Super Mario Bros, Worms, The Blues Brothers, Hudson's Adventure Island, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III - The Manhattan Project. I'd like to play GTA V, The Last of Us and some other interesting ones. Maybe I will someday.
