Topic Question

Name an actor/actress that you think is underrated and why.

Comments

Yeah but not enough compared to others like Emma Watson, Brie Larson, or any MCU actor at least where I'm from.

Most actors aren't really household names anymore. Movie stars are much less relevant. Saoirse is quite successful and she gets a lot of recognition for someone so young.

Liv Ullmann. I think she's underrated in the US because many of her films aren't in english and the ones that are were never promoted enough here. If the "why?" question is meant to be more directed at why she should be held in higher esteem--just watch anything she's in, from the more well-known (persona, cries and whispers, autumn sonata) to films like "shame" "the hour of the wolf" "the passion of anna" "the night visitor" (i could go on and on) every single performance is captivating. she dilevers he lines brilliantly, but doesn't even need to speak, her body language and facial expressions are enough to make you forget you're watching a film and get completely invested and lost in her characters.

John Goodman. He looks nothing like a typical Hollywood star but his presence and dialogue delivery always elevate the project he's in. His comedic intuition is incredible and fits perfectly with his roles in voice acting and in Coen Brothers films. Even though he's well known and is in many big movies, I don't often hear people talk about him being a great actor with a wide range.

Denis Lavant! He has physical presence and virtuosity that I no actor has really captured, he also has a combination of having a striking distinct look, and having the range to play a number of characters. His work with greats like Clair Denis and Leos Carax are simply electrifying. I mean Holy Motors alone, all different kind of transformations he has in that make much more celebrated actors body of work look merely cute.

I'll check out Dillon's performance.

Mickey Rourkes performance of Bukowski was fantastic, but I still have to give it to Dillion, everything from his body language to the way he spoke was just like bukowski it was really surprising to see, especially from dillion who wouldn't seem like the actor to take on such a role. I agree though Rourke was a great actor but unfortunately he's lost his touch, did a hell of a performance in the wrestler though.

I haven't seen Factotum but for me the best portrait of Charles Bukowski is Mickey Rourke's performance in Barfly. He was outstanding. This and Angel Heart are roles of his life. Another wasted talent, but a lot of damage he done to himself.

Oskitello

Thank you for catching that! 😅

Matt Dillon

Too many to name; Mark Rylance, Epetha Merkerson, Chris Cooper, Ben Foster, Max von Sydow... but considering his performance in Uncut Gems, I’ll go with Adam Sandler. Unlike most underrated actors, Sandlers overlooked talent is largely his own fault. He’s phoned in much of his career with a stale comedic shtick that got old decades ago, but when he shows up to really perform like in Punch Drunk Love and Uncut Gems, he’s utterly captivating.

For actresses I'd say Charlotte Gainsbourg. She is the type of actress who takes risks and portrays roles of characters that seem quite difficult to approach, such as in the film antichrist or nymphomaniac. She is able to speak to the audience just by using her own distinctive body language. It shows that she is very precise about the roles she choices and puts forth her complete efforts and talents. Would love to see her work with more controversial directors similar to Lars Von Trier.

Christian Sanaploianu

Still, anyone with that kind of talent should be a household name.

Wolfman Brandon

I'd have to say Matt Dillon especially after seeing his performance in The House That Jack Built. He is a very talented actor who unfortunately acted in a handful of shitty films. Another great performance from him would be in Factotum, in which he portrays the role of Charles Bukowski's alter ego Hank Chinaski.

Steven Seagal. He should play in more ambitious projects because of incredible range of facial expressions. Ok, time to be serious. I would also pick Naomi Watts. She was beyond of any adjective in Mulholland Drive. I would like to see her more in projects like this, she's too good for productions such as The Impossible or King Kong. As for the actors - Malcolm McDowell. Of course A Clockwork Orange comes to mind but he was also memorable in camp production Caligula. Played in many movies, however he didn't use fully his potential. Characteristic actor with basically no awards.

Oskitello

I don't entirely agree that not many people know who but regardless, I think she's not a household name cause most people can't pronounce it. Honestly, I think if she isn't well known, which I don't agree with, is because the name is seemingly foreign to a lot of people.

Saoirse Ronan. She's probably the best actress working today yet few know about her. I first discovered her in Brooklyn in 2015 where she was quiet, subtle, and completely natural as an Irish immigrant. Then I saw her in Lady Bird years later as an angsty American teenager and did not recognize her at all. I was blown away by her performance that I had to look her up and was amazed that it was the same actress from Brooklyn. Any one who could do such polar opposite type of roles so perfectly deserves the highest level of attention.

Wolfman Brandon

Christopher Abbott is quickly becoming one of my favorite actors, he feels so natural in every role and inhabits his characters in ways that truly don’t feel like a performance they feel very lived in and it reminds me a lot of Joaquin Phoenix and Daniel Day-Lewis to be honest. I know you’ve seen It Comes at Night but you should definitely check out his other work like James White, Piercing, Catch-22, Black Bear, and Possessor. He was also on Girls for a bit which I think you’ve said you’re a fan of.

Dan Tedesco

Kyle MacLachlan. Some actors are complimented by saying they can play comedy or drama equally well. MacLachlan is one of the few who can play comedy and drama equally well at literally the same time. He shows more range in Twin Peaks alone than most leading men show in their entire careers.

Derek H.

Are you talking about actresses who won't be headed to Gitmo soon? That's a tough one. Lol 🤔

Magnolia is easily my favorite thing he's done. I think the reason not a lot of people take him seriously or recognize how great he is as a performer cause he himself doesn't take himself very seriously. Most respected actors are pretty choosey with their roles whereas John C Riley will seemingly do any old shit as long as there's a check with the occasional passion project. In a way, I really admire him because he's not up his own ass about his craft or talent. He clearly just likes to perform and be in movies even if that movie is Cirque du Freak: The Vampire's Assistant. Get you a man that can do both.

Tyler Shobe

As someone who has always kinda obsessed with character actors, I'll say John C. Reilly. A lot of people will only know him from his comedic movies, which he's great in, but: Boogie Nights, Chicago, Hard Eight, Gangs of New York? Hardly ever the leading man, but always memorable.

Shaeffer Holt

I think a select few people correctly rate Naomi Watts as one of Hollywood's greatest actresses working. Aside from some polite comments like, "Oh yeah, she's pretty good in X movie," I don't think she's truly given the praise she deserves. From her work with Lynch and Haneke all the way down to her more accessible affair like The Impossible or St Vincent, she always gives an incredible performance. She's consistently close to if not the best part of the movies she's in. Her lack of mainstream appreciation and attention is a shame.

Tyler Shobe

Parker Posey is CRIMINALLY underrated!!

Tony Moro

Maiara Walsh. Plus we know each other.
