Topic Question

Name an actor/actress you think is overrated and why. Topic video to follow.

Overall it's not the movie I want to return to but I enjoyed her performance.

I was conflicted about Vox Lux might feel different on a re-watch

jared Clarke

Agree but I love her as Mathilda. And she was very good in Vox Lux.

Controversial one here, Natalie Portman, I really don’t see anything special about her, besides her striking looks. Not that she’s not a capable actor , but she certainly has been casted in roles that require a level of depth and an extra gear she doesn’t seem to hit. If I’m being honest Blackswann, Jackie and Annihilation would greatly benefit from an actress with more range and nuance.

Jennifer Lawrence – When on screen, she often feels like she’s been pulled out of a soap opera. She relies on bombastic monologues and strong women tropes instead of bringing out the psychology in characters. There are exceptions such as Winter’s Bone where I think she is really good but lately she’s been coasting on her fame and cashing in on franchises and caricatures in David O’Russell films.

Robert Downey Jr can play one character but that's it. Sure, he plays that one character very well but for me he lacks the range you see from many of the other core Marvel figure heads like Johansson, Hemsworth or Ruffalo.

Tyler Shobe

Does this include Magnolia? I don't necessarily agree but even if I did that would be my exception.

Tyler Shobe

Tom Cruise is NOT an actor, he's a glorified stuntman who also loves to shout a lot and clench his hands together trying so desperately to cry on screen.

I really don't get what's so special about Russell Crowe. He basically plays the same damn character over and over again. He also has an obsession with wanting to wear such heavy leather outfits so we can constantly hear it on the microphones.

You can have a few topics with underrated/overrated. My favorite would be "Name a film composer you think is overrated..." The King is only one.

Oskitello

Yeah, he is overrated. Didn't deserve oscar for The Revenant, it was way more physical perfomance than emotional depth. He didn't convince me in some of his roles, including Titanic (no chemistry with Kate Winslet btw. and Walter White said "Chemistry must be respected.") and The Departed. There's something fake about him. I enjoyed his performance as a pathetic, comic relief guy in Once Upon... and I liked his role in Django. His best performance, in my opinion, is Arnie Grape.

Oskitello

Leonardo DiCaprio. For me, his best work has been Wolf of Wall Street and Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Everything else, including his best actor win in The Revenant, I just do not see what everyone else sees. He’s worked with some of the greatest living directors, the ones known for pulling great performances out of actors and actresses and he is just okay in many of those parts. The Aviator, The Departed, Catch Me If You Can... I walked away thinking, a lot of people could’ve played that part just as well. I’m not saying he’s bad, just overrated.

LOL I don't know if i'll be able to answer this question without being bashed but i'll give a general answer and just say "any rapper," ie; Ice Cube, Ice-T, etc. Many of these ACTORS of the past couldn't buy a role; even when they've gone to Juliard or wherever because they have to constantly compete with folks who just may be "trending" I feel like, or even LL Cool J.. lol. Not to disparage them as actors but I mean, Halloween Resurrection damnit, why did they have to have Busta Rhymes... I mean.. anyone else could've made that movie pivotal, hell, Corey Feldman. I've taken film classes and have been in a few stage plays so I guess I may be a bit biased towards seeing the profession saturated in that way where trendiness is placed before talent. Some musicians are honestly talented I mean I really liked 8 mile.. ? lol ranting

Emma Watson. How she became so popular is beyond me. She seems like she's giving only half the effort at most in every role as if she doesn't care. Even in good movies like Little Women, she's easily the worst part and how she got so much praise as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, at least by the general public, is a total mystery to me. There are dozens of unknown actresses out there that could've done better than her.
