One element of the film that I noticed is that there are no scenes that I can remember shot in straight daylight. It's always dawn, dusk, dark or cloudy. For me, that brought out the inherent melancholy of the film.

2021-03-09 01:52:16 +0000 UTCIt definitely has the look. Some beautiful locations and shots. These mountains in Empire, especially near the end of the film were amazing, looking like big waves. There's a scene (spoiler) where Fern is laying naked in the water with a pose similar to Jesus Christ on the cross. I thought it's connected to these mountains. Pain involved with Empire plus Christian symbol (Jesus was crucified on the mountain) and shape of mountains-waves/water, but maybe it's misinterpretion. Have issue with the score, I think it's too maudlin. Something what fits for the Oscars. Agree with previous comments about McDormand's performance. Wish the movie had more emotional impact on me. Was okay, could be better.

2021-03-06 23:33:42 +0000 UTCI wasn’t a fan of some of the dialogue in scenes like the early one where Fern encounters old friends/acquaintances in that store and they mention how they’re worried about her which felt forced but the times the movie absolutely worked was when it was operating as a visual poem

2021-03-06 23:25:45 +0000 UTCAnyone catch the allusion to The Searchers right at the end of the film? The shot of McDormand walking out of her old home

2021-03-06 21:29:10 +0000 UTCAgreed. I have some opinions on why that might be. Why her character wasn’t really formed until the second half, and why I struggled with it but, still kinda working out my feelings on it. May have to watch parts of it again to solidify my stance

2021-03-06 20:59:27 +0000 UTCVery lyrical, evocative film about a way of life that doesn’t often get depicted in films. But ultimately it’s a little too remote for its own good. That may be part of the “objective” stance of the film—the willingness to stand back and observe without judgment—like a lot of other film steeped in the neorealist tradition (such as The Florida Project, as someone stated). But I feel like I didn’t get to know Fern or anyone else in the film the way I did the mother, daughter, and landlord in The Florida Project. The film is not without its moments of poignancy, and McDormand is certainly a strong central presence, but I didn’t have the connection with her character the way I did with others before her.

2021-03-06 20:31:27 +0000 UTCMakes for a good companion piece for The Florida Project. Linda reminded me of one those kids. So endearing! There also was a perfect ending point when she stood up and left, but sadly the credits didn't start rolling and the movie went on for a good twenty minutes or so.

2021-03-06 18:24:03 +0000 UTCI thought it was great. Definitely deserving of all the attention it has been getting. I agree with one critic I listen to who said it's "a real 'what you give to it, it gives to you' film" and as for the film's intentions they also mention that "the politics aren't political, they're social and humanistic."

2021-03-06 17:17:01 +0000 UTCYeah, I'm torn by it. Some things I liked, other things I didnt. It never quite came together for me and I'm working out my feelings as to why in specificity. IT had it's moments tho.

2021-03-06 17:09:44 +0000 UTCliked it, but felt it was not as indicting on the systems that lead alot of these people into this life style,( like a Sorry We Missed You by Ken Loach or First Cow by Kelly Reichart) but a cool little lower class neo realism piece, with good performances and film making.

2021-03-06 12:14:09 +0000 UTCI thought it was good. A very lonely movie and the cinematography really coveys that. Countless shots of her by her lonesome among the southwest wilderness.

2021-03-06 11:23:03 +0000 UTCLiked it, respected it, didn’t love it. I was pleasantly surprised to see the film try to grapple with McDormand’s psychology and that there was an element of choice to the lifestyle, not just a ship being buffeted by the waves of capitalism. I liked The Rider better.
