Next Review
Added 2021-05-04 18:36:12 +0000 UTCI'm finishing up another trilogy next week. This time I'm completing Lars Von Trier's Depression series. I've seen Melancholia multiple times over the years, yet it's the one film in the trilogy I haven't reviewed. What are your opinions on the film if you've seen it?

I have not seen Nymphomaniac 1&2. I have seen Antichrist and Melancheolia, though it has been about 5-7 years. What I really like about Melancholia is that I think that it is Von Trier’s attempt to tap into the zeitgeist of contemporary society, especially if you compare it to a film that must have been a part of its inspiration, 1951’s When Worlds Collide. When you watch WWC, it is a product of its time and place being postwar United States. Even though it is about the end of the world, there is still an odd optimism to it. The world responds with great urgency and puts a huge amount of their resources into building a rocket to take a few people to the planet that was coming to collide with Earth on the off chance that they could survive, and humanity would continue. In Melancholia, everyone just kind of sits around, hoping that Melancholia will miss the Earth, then just waits for the end when it becomes apparent that it will not.

2021-05-04 20:07:56 +0000 UTCI had no idea it was part of a trilogy, yet more films to add the eternally growing list. I saw it just after it came out and I recall it was green tinged and melancholic so I guess it was what it said it was. I don't recall being disappointed and would watch it again so overall yes it was a decent film.

2021-05-04 19:30:05 +0000 UTCMelancholia is my favorite Von Trier picture. When I saw for the first time, I felt a sense of impending doom, a real nihilism that made me think about it for several days. AntiChrist has its problems, but visually and stylistically it's really something to watch - it too made me consider it over a few days. Nymphomaniac starts out strong, but then in the second part it spirals into self loathing and mutilation and then in the final scenes does the unforgiveable by violating the integrity of one of its central characters (trying not to spoil it).

2021-05-04 19:27:05 +0000 UTCI'm a bit opposite. This one is my least favorite compared to Antichrist and Nymphomaniac. But I do agree that Part 2 of Nympho is disappointing.

2021-05-04 19:22:16 +0000 UTCI haven't seen it since it came out but I remember it being visually amazing and darkly funny due to most of the characters having no filter. Definitely my favorite of the Depression trilogy, not the biggest fan of Antichrist and Part 1 of Nymphomaniac is pretty good with Part 2 being a little disappointing.
